About this listen

Two sisters. One enchanted forest. And a reckless choice that could destroy kingdoms …

Taken away from her ordinary life, Rose Valrois finds herself in a world full of secrets and forbidden magic. There she meets her new stepsister, the enigmatic Princess Neeve, who will either become her best friend … or her worst enemy.

In the shadows of the magical Darkwood, Rose discovers danger and adventure in her quest for answers about the mysteries surrounding her. When she’s rescued by Thorne, the Dark Elf guardian of the forest, he binds her to the Darkwood and forbids her to speak of its secrets.

But secrets have a way of getting loose, especially when there’s hidden magic involved, and Rose falls deeper into the thorny tangles of her own past. Her sister, Neeve, is concealing dangerous powers of her own, and the two of them are soon entangled in a destiny that will bring them face-to-face on opposite sides of a deadly magical war.

Ultimately, Rose must risk her freedom, her world, and even her truest love to save her sister. Can she bear to make that sacrifice? Does she even have the choice?

Called “A fantastical series” by Publishers Weekly, USA Today bestselling author Anthea Sharp has crafted a lushly written fairy-tale trilogy weaving elements of “Snow-White and Rose-Red” with romance, magic, cozy fantasy, and secrets that that will change the fate of worlds.

last two books make the series worth it

main character is hard to like much. she is whiny and acts childish even in her older years. The reader has ok voices for all of the characters, but sounds very millennial which made it hard to get through the first book.

someone, please talk to the narrator

I really liked the story, so I hung in there, but someone needs to tell this narrator that she makes the characters sound waaaaaaaaaay too whiny. Every other sentence ends with a whining tone. I literally had to take breaks because the whining made me cringe so frequently. please stop reading the story like a whiny teenager. If I had purchased it, I would return it. Got it free on audible plus, so, good enough.

If you like Sarah j mass, you’ll love this!

I loved this novel, reminds me of Sarah j mass, I loved how long it was. It was like coming along on an epic fairytale adventure, with mystical creatures and a forbidden mysterious land just waiting to be discovered….

I read a comment abt the narrator’s performance but personally I thought the performance was very well done- the main character is a spoiled teenage princess from the big city, and for a lot of the story she’s 12-15 which are sort of whiny years. But she also matures with time, although she can sometimes be diplomatic, manipulative, and shallow in a lovely FLAWED depth of character way that I adored. I was so happy to read a book where the main character isn’t a “most perfect most beautiful superhero who does everything perfectly” like many heroines, but struggles with similar insecurities as normal fourteen year olds would in her place. Definitely not a novel for someone who is bothered by the immaturity of preteens tho, for me it felt a bit nostalgic!

All in all, I loved it very much and it was a joy to read!

Predictable but engaging

Enjoyable YA fantasy that keeps you interested but not necessarily on your toes, at least for a seasoned fantasy reader!
