About this listen

Enter the fray in this luminous new adventure from Christopher Buehlman, set during the war-torn, goblin-infested years just before The Blacktongue Thief.

The goblins have killed all of our horses and most of our men.

They have enslaved our cities, burned our fields, and still they wage war.

Now, our daughters take up arms.

Galva—Galvicha to her three brothers, two of whom the goblins will kill—has defied her family’s wishes and joined the army’s untested new unit, the Raven Knights. They march toward a once-beautiful city overrun by the goblin horde, accompanied by scores of giant war corvids. Made with the darkest magics, these fearsome black birds may hold the key to stopping the goblins in their war to make cattle of mankind.

The road to victory is bloody, and goblins are clever and merciless. The Raven Knights can take nothing for granted—not the bonds of family, nor the wisdom of their leaders, nor their own safety against the dangerous war birds at their side. But some hopes are worth any risk.

What the critics say

“Buehlman has a real gift for writing complicated, endearing characters trying to do their best in a complicated, fully lived-in world. I can’t wait for his next book.”—Kelly Link, bestselling author of the Pulitzer Prize finalist Get in Trouble

“Christopher Buehlman’s worldbuilding is second-to-none, so grimly evocative it feels like the worst parts of history in the best possible way. Galva’s story is full of heartbreak and despair, but its darkness is balanced by exquisitely-crafted moments that explore the bonds of friendship, sisterhood, and love that endure despite the soul-shattering horrors of war.”—Nicholas Eames, author of Kings of the Wyld

“Thrilling. . . Series fans looking for insight into Buehlman’s badass heroine’s psyche will want to check this out.”—Publishers Weekly

★★★★★

TL;DR 10/10 a must-read if you loved The Black Tongue Thief and want to know more about Galva, the goblin wars and the war corvids!

The Black Tongue Thief has to be 1 of my favourite books ever, and the narration blew me away considering it was Christopher Buehlman himself that did it all! So safe to say that when I heard about The Daughter's War coming out I was unbelievably excited and pre-ordered both the audiobook here and the hardcover book! I was a little bummed not to get a sequel from where TBTT left off.. but Galva is 1 of my favourite supporting characters out of any book I've ever read, and I'm now so happy to get some backstory on her as well as the goblin wars we hear so much about in TBTT as it has shaped much of the world and culture. This book was amazing, I started reading and listening to it as soon as it released a couple days ago at midnight! Don't hesitate, if you loved TBTT then you can't go wrong with The Daughter's War! I definitely think that going forward with the series, it will almost be a must-read just so you know Galva's backstory as well as some of the history of the goblin wars.

Great world building and excellent story telling

Loved this book, excellent world building and amazing character creation. I was a bit disappointed with main characters love story with the queen, did not seem well developed Co sidering is is meant to be an epic love. Other than that, solid story excellent descriptions of characters, scenery, history, magic and experiences. Can not wait for more books in this series!

An all-time favourite

A fantastic story. I can’t recommend it enough. The other book in this series, The Blacktongue Thief, was also wonderful. I wish there were more books in this series!

Take this book on its own.

I enjoyed this book. Admittedly I was hoping for more of the charm and adventure of the Black tongue thief, which this book does not have.
I found some of the plot points to be predictable and some of the characters were pretty unfulfilling.

So I suggest you start this story prepared to consume it on its own as it walks a very different path than the first book.

Excellent prequel

Story is great, narrator is great. Fills in the history mentioned in the blacktongue thief.

Brilliant Stand-Alone Story

If you liked The Blacktongue Thief, then I highly recommend this story. Although it's told from the perspective of a different narrator, Christopher Buehlman once again demonstrates his unique talent for finding the perfect voice for his characters. The character of Galva is written so perfectly. This book, like The Blacktongue Thief before it, is voicey as hell, and the narrator does a phenomenal job of bringing this voice--and the world around it--to life. I'll be thinking about this one for a long time.
