About this listen

Virtual worlds are places of boundless freedom. Anyone can become an elven mage or an invisible rogue, join a clan, and go on raids, fight, develop their characters, and most importantly, escape from the daily grind.

However, a game is only a game if you can quit. This is something I learned the hard way. I just wanted to let off some steam in virtual reality and ended up getting murdered and imprisoned in the body of one of the undead - slow, clumsy, and cursed to die at the hand of other players over and over again.

The only way out of this awful predicament was to find the legendary Scroll of Rebirth, but the helpless plague-ridden corpse would need to be turned into a real killing machine. If only people knew what it was like to level up a dead rogue....

Great premise and narrated well

My views are skewed from the terrible book I just listened to. So the story, to me, is fantastic. From HWFWM I've learned to actually enjoy the stats info and logistics or thoughtfulness of skill choices. Narration is good, story pretty good, and premise is great. Hoping we find out more about main character's RL in next book

Interesting premise that doesn’t pan out

I thought that the premise of someone stuck in a virtual world, trying to get out was interesting. How can he get out? Who will help in the real world? And who will double cross the hero? And later the book hints at the blurring distinction between virtual and real… But the story gets so mired in the details of the game violence and the accumulation of each point for each level that it gets boring. A good read only for those who enjoy game stats!
The narrator does a good job with what is often just reading a list of numbers!

Worth checking out

The starting was a bit rough, but overall I'd say it's a decent story. The MC has purpose, willpower, and the drive to survive, but I find his awareness to be a bit lacking. He just gets outplayed and pushed around a little too easily.
Also, a two-handed welding rogue? Man, rogue is all about swiftness, technique, finesse, and lethality. A Flamberge or two-handed weapon doesn't achieve any of those, it's a huge buzz kill imo. But the action kinda makes up for that. It's just weird having that thought in the back of my mind that a rogue is not built like that 🙅‍♂️.
The narrator is pretty standard, no complaints there.
Overall, a pretty good novel. It's worth the time.

Stilted characters

Something must have been lost in translation. It makes no sense at times, characters have bizarre reactions or switch topics/moods abruptly. Honestly think it would be good with a better translation but as it stands it's borderline listenable.

just don't

Disappointing, it's slow, boring and the characters don't go anywhere. I kept listening hoping and hoping it would get better but it didn't even at the end.
