About this listen
Hailed as one of the world's supreme masterpieces on the subject of death and dying, The Death of Ivan Ilyich is the story of a worldly careerist, a high court judge who has never given the inevitability of his death so much as a passing thought. But one day death announces itself to him, and to his shocked surprise he is brought face to face with his own mortality. How, Tolstoy asks, does an unreflective man confront his one and only moment of truth? A thoroughly absorbing and, at times, terrifying glimpse into the abyss of death, it is also a strong testament to the possibility of finding spiritual salvation.

Exceptional narration.
Welcome to the death bed of Ivan Ilyich. David Shaw-Parker’s reading is nothing short of a tour de force.

Over-acting
Narrator has a good voice but he needs to dial it back. Not every THE or AND requires profundity chum.

A meaningful tale
Though the story was written almost 150 years ago, but it is still very much relevant today from the viewpoint of fearing and then coming to terms with death, and also they way it describes, hopes, fears, aspirations and disappointments of a civil servant. Narration is excellent.

Nope.
Narration was unbearable. He's far too animated, as if it's children's book, and completely changes characters' silly accents midway though. Save this one to read, not listen.
