Story
Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

Have you ever wondered "Why did I do that?" or "Why can't I just control my behavior?" Others may judge our reactions and think, "What's wrong with that person?" When questioning our emotions, it's easy to place the blame on ourselves; holding ourselves and those around us to an impossible standard. It's time we started asking a different question. Through deeply personal conversations, Oprah Winfrey and renowned brain and trauma expert Dr. Bruce Perry offer a groundbreaking and profound shift from asking “What’s wrong with you?” to “What happened to you?”

Publisher's Summary
A pioneering physician reveals how childhood stress can lead to lifelong health problems and shows us what we can do to break the cycle.
Two-thirds of us have experienced at least one adverse childhood experience, or ACE, such as abuse, neglect, parental substance dependence, or mental illness. Even though these events may have occurred long ago, they have the power to haunt us long into adulthood, and now we have found that they may even contribute to lifelong illness.
Dr. Nadine Burke Harris, the founder/CEO of the Center for Youth Wellness and recipient of the Arnold P. Gold Foundation Humanism in Medicine Award, expands on similar topics as in her popular TED talk as she demystifies the connection between adversity and ill health. After surveying more than 17,000 adult patients, she found that the higher a person's ACE score, the worse their health. This led Burke Harris to an astonishing breakthrough - childhood stress changes our neural systems, and its impact lasts a lifetime.
Through vivid storytelling that combines both scientific insight with deeply moving stories about her patients and their families, Burke Harris illuminates her journey of discovery from the academy to her own pediatric practice in San Francisco's poverty-ridden Bayview Hunters Point. She reroots the story of childhood trauma and its aftermath in science to help listeners see themselves and others more clearly.
For anyone who has faced a difficult childhood or who cares about the millions of children who do, the innovative and acclaimed health interventions outlined in the The Deepest Well represents vitally important hope for change.

Wow! an eye-opening book!
I listened to this book while driving to and from work. I needed to read a book that knew me inside and out and this is the book. I have an high Ace score and few of her clients stories I was nodding my head saying "yup! I relate to that" I "oohh and ahhh" though the whole book. As I went through a terrible childhood and know have 2 kids of my own this book has helped me in preventing my own actions towards my own kids. So thank you Nadine Harris for having this on audiobook!

I wanted to love it, but it missed slightly.
I saw her TedTalk and was so excited to listen. But i struggled for the last 3 hrs. It felt repetitive and her long descriptions of conversation she had were just boring. I lost the message in the middle. It came together in the end, but i forced myself to finish it.

rich and insightful
A beautiful story teller and Dr! I didn't know much about ACEs before this, some about trauma and effects of adversity. This was more than educational for me. I found myself experiening an array of emotions reflecting on the stories shared and my own past.

Helped me to understand Adult Childhood Adversity
Helped me to understand how even a "normal childhood" can affect a child negatively, and how damaging stress in a parent can be to a young child.
