About this listen

London 1814... Drake, Duke of Manchester is searching the Marriage Mart for a perfect bride. He wants a woman who is poised, sophisticated, and worthy of the title Duchess. But most of all, he wants a woman who does not want the useless emotion of love.

Socially awkward Miss Penelope Clayton isn't meant for marriage. A serious botanist, she has no desire to wed, so being forced by her guardian to participate in the Season to find a husband is torture. She'll never fit in with the ton, especially if they discover she's been pretending to be a man within the scientific community.

As Drake's family makes over Penelope, turning her from naive bluestocking to enchanting debutante, he is put upon to introduce her to society and eligible bachelors. Despite dance lessons and new gowns, Penelope is the opposite of poised and sophisticated as she stumbles from one mishap to the next. Why then, does he find it so hard to resist her?

Heart's Desire

This was my second time reading this book and it’s still as good as it was the first time. I love both the heroine and hero – they are so well matched, and the way that Drake ultimately show’s Penelope that he loves and accepts her for who she is. Watching them fall in love – the partner they got was not the one they expected.

Drake is strong, smart, caring and very protective – my kind of hero. Watching him realize that he’s in love was pure pleasure as it was not what he wanted or expected in his choice of bride. Penelope is smart, independent, and spunky. While she lacks confidence in fitting in, she doesn’t lack it in her love of botany. You’d think that these two characters are opposites, but at the heart, they are similar.

Truly enjoyed this book and am looking forward to finishing the rest of the series.

The narrator did a a pretty good job, enjoyed listening to the audio book.

Narrator Ruins the Story

I have often been amazed at the criticism thrown at some narrators who seemed acceptable to me, but this time all the criticism was well deserved. She made me cringe time and over again. Seems to be trained to read children stories only. Her regular voice is perfectly fine but she feels obliged to make it sound like different variations of Bugs Bunny when she plays the characters. She effectively destroyed the persona of the male protagonist by using a horrific voice and sometimes using exactly the same one for both the hero and the heroine so one cannot make out who is actually talking.
I thought this story occasionally very funny, though not very deep, if it had not been ruined by the narration.

The narrator was a different person than the narrator of the books following this one in the series.

Although the narrator was good at narrating in general, her different voices for some of the women and particularly the men was not so good. It reminded me of the Munchkins on the Wizard of Oz. I did bot like the men’s part at all. I do not wish to sound rude or disrespectful but I understand why the narrator was different in the books that followed. In future I will not assume it’s the same person reading the whole series. The story itself was good. Although the Duke was a bit of an arse for the most part, redeeming himself in the end. I have enjoyed the series very much and recommend it. The adventures of the sisters and their stories are entertaining.

Narrator

Might have been a good story but I had to quit listening after about 20 minutes. The narrator would be good for children’s book… not a romance.
