About this listen

This collection of 25 Hercule Poirot adventures is compiled from short stories written by Agatha Christie for The Sketch magazine in 1923 from March to December. In these stories, including "The Disappearance of Mr. Davenheim", "The Veiled Lady", and "The Adventure of the Egyptian Tomb", the eccentric private detective slowly and surely solves mysteries involving jealousy, revenge, and greed. These stories were well-received at the time and cemented Christie's reputation as the worthy successor to Arthur Conan Doyle.

Classic

Classic mystery fare, though a little dated/cringey with some of the terminology and word usage.

The early cases of Hercule Poirot

I am a long fan of these stories. I was delighted to find that I hadn’t known of these stories. As always, the author didn’t disappoint.

wonderful collection

Some of my favorites all mixed up into a simple mix of short stories. Easy to follow along since each chapter is a new story. Enjoyable to listen to.

Deductive Reasoning On Display

This collection of early Agatha Christie stories (published in 'The Sketch' magazine in the early 1920s) is undeniably enjoyable. The mysteries are dated - including amusingly casual racism - and strikingly G-rated (don't expect anything even approaching gritty/violent).. but clever and expository of an iconic sleuth in evolution - shifting from an arrogant know-it-all to an exemplary teacher of "how to solve crime with nothing more than logic".

As to presentation: Reader Charles Armstrong takes loud, deep breaths injudiciously, but his diction, timbre, pacing, and tone are otherwise commendable.. and his Belgian accent is spot-on. Factoring in impressive sound quality, we have an imperfect but above-average listening experience.

Altogether, this compendium flirts with "Cozy" status - too vanilla for my personal Mystery genre tastes - but it's an excellent demonstration of Agatha Christie's considerable plotting chops.
'The Early Cases Of Hercule Poirot' merits 8 stars out of 10. I am quite pleased that I was able to get it on sale.. because it was a very pleasant way to spend a couple of quiet afternoons. Spend the Credit.

[Incidentally: 'Captain Hastings' isn't anywhere near as interesting as 'Dr. Watson'.. but the credulous sidekick is a brilliant super-sleuth convention. Christie uses it to the fullest]

Nice collection

Hercule's accent could use some work. Sometimes it almost sounds a bit Mexican. Great collection of stories and overall very well performed.

Very enjoyable

Agatha Christie is a classic and masterful writer, and Charles Armstrong does an admirable job in narrating one of her flagship detectives. Poirot, Hastings and Japp all have some definite nods towards the performances from the David Suchet series, which I found enjoyable. Characters are voiced well, and the production quality is quite nice. This works very well for some cozy mystery listening, and having gotten it on sale, would consider it a bargain.

Good version for sure eh !

A pretty solid narrator whose delivery is perfect Poirot. I enjoy listening to different narrators and enjoy comparing them as well as comparing them to the stage and screen Poirot and cast actors. Five thumbs up.

Stories almost 100 years old still stand up.

The gist of many of these stories were used in later long-form fiction. Charles Armstrong pales by comparison with Hugh Fraser. If I had never listened to Fraser or Suchet narrate, I might have found him ok. But I was disappointed with this book.
