Publisher's Summary

Rajiv Surendra (the rapping mathlete from Mean Girls) read Life of Pi, discovered it was being adapted into a major motion picture, and embarked on a ten-year journey to land the role of a lifetimebut this is not a journey of goals and victories, this is a story of obsessively pursuing a dream, overcoming failure, and finding meaning in life.

In 2003, Rajiv Surendra was acting in Mean Girls, playing the beloved rapping mathlete Kevin Gnapoor, when a cameraman on set gave him a copy of Life of Pi, inadvertently changing the course of his life.

Rajiv dove into the novel, mesmerized by all the similarities between Pi and himself—both are five-foot-five and share a South Indian culture; and Pi lives in a zoo, while Rajiv grew up in Scarborough, Ontario, right beside the Toronto Zoo. When Rajiv learns that Life of Pi will be made into a major motion picture, he is convinced Pi is the role he is destined to play.

To land the role he knows he must embody the spirit of the sixteen-year-old Tamil schoolboy. In a great leap of faith, he quits university and buys a one-way ticket to India. Thus begins his enchanting and bumpy years-long journey from Toronto to the sacred stone temples of South India and the actual private school in Pondicherry that the fictional Pi attended, to rural Maine where Rajiv befriends a real-life castaway, and culminating in the most unexpected of places—the cobbled streets of Munich.

Poignant, funny, colorful, and absolutely unforgettable, The Elephants in My Backyard is an inspiring tale of taking risks and following one's dreams, of process and determination, and looking back on one's endeavors—be they successes or colossal defeats—with new appreciation and meaning.

What the critics say

“The best parts of the memoir come toward the end. . . . Surendra’s creative awakening as a chalk artist is welcome, too, and his drawings scattered throughout the book display obvious talent. Surendra is also a clear stylist, and he brings sensitivity to his writing.” (The Washington Post)

“Lovely and human. The tale of a man who began by following a story and ended up creating his own.” (Jenny Lawson, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Furiously Happy)

“A beautifully written journey of self-discovery, The Elephants In My Backyard is intimate, moving, hilarious and painful. This quirky memoir unfolds in a series of anecdotes—miniature gems—much like the intricate chalk designs that are one of Rajiv Surendra’s many talents.” (Anosh Irani, author of The Parcel)

Engaging, funny, couldn’t stop listening!

I wasn’t expecting to laugh as much as I did. The way Rajiv brings his own words to life is perfection. A very enjoyable and engaging listen. I love it! Rajiv needs to narrate more audible books (please)!

Still rooting for Rajiv to be cast in Life of Pi

I grew up in the era of Mean Girls but it wasn't until a short tour of the author's NYC apartment was featured on HGTV's Handmade channel on YouTube that I became charmed by this modern Renaissance man. His passion for teaching people how to iron clothes and make beds was wholey confusing to me and Elephants in My Backyard solved that mystery. This book (also colourfully narrated by the author) was a fascinating story of a young Tamil-Candian teenager who followed his dreams which led him from Poineer Village in Toronto, to the real Pondicherry in India featured in Life of Pi, to Maine USA, Munich, and various other Scarborough adventures. If you like memoirs about creative artists, this was a great one.

I absolutely loved this book. I obviously loved mean girls but that was only a small part of what makes Rajiv Surendra. I fell in love listening to his story.

Best audible in some time. Hire this guy to read.

This was a charming novel and the author narration was impeccable. I would seek him out as a narrator AND an author. He brings such personality to the work in his voice - a treasure not to be missed.

Warmth

Thanks for writing such an open account of your youth, personal struggles and tenacity to reach your desired goal. I guess in life it doesn’t really matter if we actually achieve all of our goals but simply need to acquire an understanding of our unique selves as we move towards those goals. Thanks for writing this novel.
