Publisher's Summary

They stole his crown. So, he stole their daughter…

For years, Erik, the scarred king of the Ever Kingdom, has thought of nothing but vengeance against the man who killed his father and trapped him beneath the waves, making him a prisoner in his own realm.

Until his enemy's daughter unintentionally breaks the chains on the Ever, and Erik makes her the unwitting pawn in his vicious game of revenge.

She's innocent. He's vicious. He will take back what he lost, no matter the price. Unless she steals his heart first.

Welcome to the passionate world of the Ever Kingdom, where pirates, sirens, and fae collide with Vikings in a dark fantasy romance between a villain and the innocent princess who holds his heart.

This book ends on a cliffhanger. This series is set in the same world as the bestselling Broken Kingdoms series but can be listened to independently.

Interesting Story

Didn't love the female narrator but otherwise decent story. Took a bit to get going.

This book was a breath of fresh air

This book was a breath of fresh air for a more mature reader (not YA, not NA).

The world setting is a mash-up of Medieval castles, Viking and Pirate ships, canons, magic, swords, curses, and elves.

Livia, princess of the Night Elves in one plane of existence; and Erik, King of the Ever - the other plane. I liken the two worlds to to a coin flip. Fall down a whirlpool and right back up on the other side. Both sides are made up of different elvish cultures. Both have a lot of prejudice towards the other; a history of misunderstandings and ill deeds. Livia and Erik have to challenge their peoples' assumptions, meet their peoples' expectations, and solve a bit a of a mystery plague in the Ever. The two appear to be opposites, but we learn more about them as the story progresses and their understanding of one another deepens.

I like that Livia isn't a complete airhead/damsel. She has a ton of courage and fire in her. Erik is a badass, and a whole lot dark while having deeper morals. He still is a bit unhinged, and his character stays true to form. So many books have badass alpha men that turn out to be big teddy bears with a lot of bark... Erik is a badass alpha dude, but he absolutely can't be mistaken for a cuddly anything.

I love that the story has deeper context and dialogue than the story of the main couple. There are themes on self-growth, self-awareness, overcoming trauma and challenging misconceptions, along with the inherent dangers of blind prejudice.

I am very excited to continue the story in book 2; however, I've been leaning towards audiobooks and book 2 hasn't released yet on audible. It is pre-ordered! Arriving June 11th, 2024.

Narrators are Lucy Rivers and Will Thorne - They each do an amazing job bringing the cast to life. They have accents, and at first, it was a bit difficult to follow their pronunciation of some words, but got used to it.

Narration was terrible

Horrendous narration from both. It took away from the story. Not sure if I will continue with the audio books for this series

I had to return due to narration, enjoying storyline

I tried to stick with it, I think the story will be amazing. I'll have to get a physical copy. The female narrator, how she does the men, I don't think I could make it the whole book.
Storyline really sounds like it will be great!

Solid Beginning

Sea fae v Land fae. I found the story entertaining. The pacing was good and the writing style though not simple is also accesible, so in my opinion well done. There is spice, (warning to those that don't care for on page action) mention, and action. Tortured souls finding acceptance and those who have been blind to some lies learning truth.

I wasn't completely swept away but found the stpry over all a solid beginning to the series.

Should be narrated duet style

The female narrator did a great job except when doing the male voices (she makes them all sound simple minded/handicapped - which for a Romantasy is pretty detrimental…).

Could barely listen to female narrator

I read and listen to books when I’m working through them, I had started out by reading this book and fell in love with the characters, however when I switched to the audiobook, I could barely tolerate the female narrator, she made this strong female lead the whiniest, most insufferable character I’ve ever experienced, Her valley girl voice with constant questioning inflections, and consistent rhythm of speaking no matter the punctuation of the sentence was very difficult to listen to and made me dread her chapters. Not only that, but the female main character in this book is 20, and they found a 40+ woman to read for her. I’m extremely disappointed in the performance and truly believe she ruined this book for me. I was more focused on how much I hated this woman’s voice than able to enjoy the story because of how grating it was.

The male voice however, holy jama llama, he was spectacular. When I looked into him, it’s no wonder he’s done mostly pirate books cause he was absolutely made for them.
In the end I would switch back and forth from reading the female perspective and listening to the male perspective, which made the whole experience tolerable in the end if not a little tedious.

It’s infuriating to find a good book only to have it ruined by poor narration. And to now see that Book 2 has the same female narrator, I will not be continuing this story on audible. Very very very disappointed.

With all that being said, this is a good book! If you read it. I would highly encourage you to do so, and not listen to it.

Not the best narration.

If you have two narrators, please, for the love of god, utilize them properly by having the male narrator perform the male characters and the female narrator, the female characters.
