About this listen

A court of revelry. A bookish heir. An impending marriage. And a dark new power rising in the world…

If allowed, Neelo Emberspear would never leave the library. Reluctant to take the throne despite their mother’s faltering health, the neurodivergent bookworm craves escape from their arranged marriage to charming fae warrior Talhan Catullus. They know their duty can be put off no longer when their mother, the drug-addled queen, disastrously lights the castle on fire.

Fighting to save their mother’s life and keep her on the throne, Neelo is astonished when bonding over the written word brings them closer than ever to their cavalier, soon-to-be husband. But the non-binary heir’s growing affections may be cut short with witch uprisings threatening to topple the entire continent.

Can Neelo claim both love and dominion before their court is reduced to ash?

Includes bonus story The Witching Trail.

Overall a great addition

A little cheesy but great twists and continuity. Will keep a look out for the next one.

Good Continuation of the Series

The Evergreen Heir follows Neelo, the Heir to the Southern Court, as they find themselves betrothed to Talhan, a childhood friend and warrior. The plot in this book is definitely the weakest in the series so far. While all books in this series have their own contained plot this one feels like it’s setting the scene for the last book. Neelo and Talhan was the book I was the most excited for but Neelo’s internal monologue about being "dark" and "unworthy" felt unfounded, as there’s no clear reason for their self-pity. I really wanted Talhan’s POV in this book, being limited to Neelo's perspective left the romance feeling unbalanced and underdeveloped. The single POV format has been this series biggest con. The romance ultimately falls flat, the abrupt way they get betrothed and Neelo’s constant self-deprication make it so that there isn’t much tension or connection.

another excellent story

all of these books have brought me so much joy. I love all of these characters and I want more! I will miss them so much when we're done in this world. This will definitely be a comfort series I keep coming back to.

Pronouns are frustrating

The pronouns in this book being they/them for a main character is throwing me off so much. On audiobooks it’s hard to discern who’s being talked about if it’s a group of people or not. This really negatively effected my experience listening to the book. Loved the series and the story. Hated the way it was written from this perspective in this way.
