About this listen
In this exhilarating series debut, police detective William Monk must solve the mystery of his own past.
His name, they tell him, is William Monk, and he is a London police detective. But the accident that felled him has left him with only half a life; his memory and his entire past have vanished. As he tries to hide the truth, Monk returns to work and is assigned to investigate the brutal murder of a Crimean War hero and man about town. Which makes Monk’s efforts doubly difficult, since he’s forgotten his professional skills along with everything else.
“Richly textured with the sights and sounds of London and its countryside … Solidly absorbing and Perry’s best to date.”—Kirkus Reviews

Brilliant!
Engaging and very entertaining. Brought to life vividly and dramatically in the narration. Anne Perry is a master of descriptive prose and story-telling. I’m so happy there are many more Inspector Monk adventures to enjoy!

Absolutely Excellent!
I had read a few of Anne Perry's other novels, including one or two about William Monk's exploits but this was the first one I listened to as an Audiobook. I found the period detail and authenticity amazing, convincing and engrossing. The narrator was perfect as much for the silences and pauses as speaking. I particularly liked the way Perry drew out the suspense at the end. Masterful. I won't soon forget it. In fact, I am about to listen to the next two in this series on Audible with the same narrator. Very highly recommended to anyone who likes period crime fiction, especially in the Victorian era in London.

Missed ending
I had hoped for an ending with Monk's superior (Rancorn) involved. A missed opportunity for sure.

Excellent Entertainment
I first met Inspector Monk a fair number of years back. Enjoyed the book. So when I went looking for a new mystery it seemed a good idea to start with book one. I was not disappointed. In fact I was drawn straight into book two... Enjoy!
