Publisher's Summary

When The Far Pavilions was first published 19 years ago, it moved the critic Edmund Fuller to write this: "Were Miss Kaye to produce no other book, The Far Pavilions might stand as a lasting accomplishment in a single work comparable to Margaret Mitchell's achievement in Gond With the Wind." From its beginning in the foothills of the towering Himalayas, M. M. Kaye's masterwork is a vast, rich, and vibrant tapestry of love and war that ranks with the greatest panoramic sagas of modern fiction.

The Far Pavilions is itself a Himalayan achievement, a book we hate to see come to an end. it is a passionate, triumphant story that excites us, fills us with joy, move us to tears, satisfies us deeply, and helps us remember just what it is we want most from a novel.

An old favourite rediscovered

Have read The Far Pavilions twice over the years and now that my eyes object to reading for hours, it was great to discover the audible book. It is wonderful. Vikas Adam does a terrific job, I highly recommend it.

Beautiful and bold

A wonderful story of courage, loyalty, love and hope. The many characters, and how their stories are weaved in the events of history and brutal events are amazing. I loved it all and made me realize the importance of friendships, sacred loves and unselfishness. Will listen to it again and I highly recommend it.

Wow!

I spent many enjoyable hours listening to this great tale. I learned a lot about the history of India and Britain’s involvement. And of course the love story was wonderful. Wally’s singing though, I could’ve done without, haha!

a bit dated

This book was a literary sensation in the 70s and it certainly does capture a time in India's history. The 'romance' of the book was very enjoyable and very good look at the life of the poor/the rich/the natives/the British/the conquered etc...of this time in India/Kashmir/Afghanistan. The war parts are told in great detail and some may really love that, but it did get a bit too long, especially at the end. 48 hours is a long time to listen to a book and it sort of faded out after about 2/3 of the way
However, the performance by Vikas Adam was amazing!!! Great accents and narration.

Every well written and narrated

I enjoyed this immensely, from the varied path the story took from the beginning to the end.

Somewhat tedious

You need to be very interested in British-India military history, and lengthy accounts of military battles to survive the length of this. I only survived this form of self flagellation by speeding up the narration. The performance was well done, but I grew weary of the breathy drama, when none was forthcoming.
