About this listen
Lovely but tough as nails, Lael Click is the daughter of a celebrated frontiersman. Haunted by her father's former captivity with the Shawnee Indians, as well as the secret sins of her family's past, Lael comes of age in the fragile Kentucky settlement her father founded. Though she faces the loss of a childhood love, a dangerous family feud, and the affection of a Shawnee warrior, Lael draws strength from the rugged land she calls home, and from Ma Horn, a distant relative who shows her the healing ways of herbs and roots found in the hills. But the arrival of an outlander doctor threatens her view of the world, God, and herself and the power of grace and redemption. This epic novel gives listeners a glimpse into the simple yet daring lives of the pioneers who first crossed the Appalachians, all through the courageous eyes of a determined young woman. Laura Frantz's debut novel offers a feast for fans of historical fiction and romance lovers alike.

Loved it!
I came to know and love these very realistic characters. The story shows so clearly that people can change, though it may take a long time and a lot of experiences first.

A Brilliant Story Overshadowed by Poor Narration
Laura Frantz’s The Frontiersman’s Daughter is a captivating journey into the rugged landscapes of 18th-century Kentucky. The story follows Lael Click, a resilient young woman navigating the complexities of frontier life, family secrets, and forbidden love. Frantz’s meticulous attention to historical detail and her ability to craft vivid, immersive settings make this novel a standout in historical fiction.
However, while the narrative shines, the audiobook experience is less than ideal. Narrator Laura Jennings’s performance has been criticized for its artificial and airy tone, with expressions that detract from the story’s authenticity. This delivery can make it challenging for listeners to fully engage with the characters and the plot. I gave up on the audiobook and finished the story by reading it on my own.
For those who cherish rich storytelling and well-developed characters, The Frontiersman’s Daughter is a must-read. To fully appreciate Frantz’s masterful prose, consider opting for the print or e-book version to immerse yourself without the distractions of the audiobook narration.
