About this listen
Fabulous family saga of secrets held through two generations, set against the atmospheric background of the Lake District at Christmas. The year 1936 is drawing to a close. Winter grips Wetmoreland and causes a rare phenonmenon: The lakes freeze. For two local families, the Richardsons and the Grindleys, this will bring unexpected upheaval, as the frozen lake entices long-estranged siblings and children to return home for the holiday season.
Some are aware of what is happening in Europe; others don't want to know. Everyone's keen to put aside their troubles - money worries, love tangles, career problems, domestic rifts - and enjoy themselves skating while they can. But one visitor carries the seed of violence, and not even the redoubtable matriarch of the Richardson clan can prevent the carefully buried secrets of the past from reappearing and transforming everything.
A compelling blend of family closeness and strife, dazzling passion and the dark influence of history, this is an enthralling listen to curl up and savour.

Need to read it again
Far too many characters to follow and keep straight the secrets and activities of one and all!

Twisty
It took me a bit to get into it with all the character building at the beginning but totally worth it. I lived how everything came full circle and all the dangling bits of the story fit in by the end.
Excellent book

Great Story But...
I almost put it down, that's how slow it was to start. Hours into listening and nothing was happening. once the action started and the plot was unfolding, I couldn't turn it off. Taking out one star for the extremely slow and a tad confusing start of the novel.

I enjoyed it.
Intriguing enough to keep you wanting to listen until the end! Well written and very entertaining. I enjoyed all the main characters. It gets a bit confusing with many people in the story; I actually finished the book not knowing the relation of a couple of them, but it did not affect the story.
This was my 2nd book by this author and I am already listening to the 3rd The Villa on the Riviera. I like her books.

The ultimate slow burn.
Well, this is the ultimate “slow burn”. If you have the patience to get to the good bits, cheers. The narration is top notch.
