In an era of grand risk, fur moguls vied to command the northwest and China markets, gambling lives and capital on the price of beaver pelts, purchases of ships and trade goods, international commerce laws, and the effects of war.

Rainy Lake!

I live on Rainy Lake in a cabin my grandfather built.
I recently discovered a Brass Plaque dedicated to the Northwest Company along the Rainy River in my home town of Fort Frances. The town is named after the wife of Governor George Simpson, Lady Frances Simpson. During one of his visits through Rainy Lake.
It was quite an inspiration after reading this amazingly account of those 20 years, 200 years ago. I also recommend Astoria, another book related to this very Interesting and historic period of our two countries.
