Publisher's Summary

Long-listed, Barnes and Noble Best New Books of the Year, 2024

"Alex Jennings' impeccable accent keeps the already propulsive novel quite engaging, and moving like a steam train about to run you over."—Vulture

"Narrator Alex Jennings offers a sparkling performance, providing layered character portraits and enlivening the story with British, American, and Greek accents...listeners who enjoy whodunits and closed-circle mysteries will want to pick this one up."—Library Journal

"Jennings confidently, confidentially embodies [the ensemble]: elegant Lara, gruff Jason, earnest Leo, biting Kate, protective Agathi, unassuming Nikos. Elliott, of course, gets star billing . . . and Jennings ensures his twists, pivots, and falsehoods are marvelously played out to the didn’t-see-that-coming final scene. The please oh-please pièce de resistance would be to put Jennings on screen in the inevitable celluloid adaptation to come."—Booklist

"Alex Jennings’ reading, with its measured pace and conversational, almost confessional tone, perfectly captures Elliot’s personality, as well as the varied voices of the small cast of characters. Listeners will be loath to press pause on this entirely unpredictable tale."—Bookpage on The Fury (Starred Review)

This program is read by Alex Jennings, who has worked extensively with the Royal Shakespeare Company and National Theatre. He is also known for his role as Edward VIII, the Duke of Windsor, in the Netflix series The Crown, along with his roles in The Queen, Lady in the Van, and The Wings of the Dove. He is a three-time Olivier Award winner and has been nominated for a BAFTA.

A masterfully paced thriller about a reclusive ex-movie star and her famous friends whose spontaneous trip to a private Greek island is upended by a murder—from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Silent Patient

This is a tale of murder.

Or maybe that’s not quite true. At its heart, it’s a love story, isn’t it?

Lana Farrar is a reclusive ex-movie star and one of the most famous women in the world. Every year, she invites her closest friends to escape the English weather and spend Easter on her idyllic private Greek island.

I tell you this because you may think you know this story. You probably read about it at the time―it caused a real stir in the tabloids, if you remember. It had all the necessary ingredients for a press sensation: a celebrity; a private island cut off by the wind…and a murder.

We found ourselves trapped there overnight. Our old friendships concealed hatred and a desire for revenge. What followed was a game of cat and mouse―a battle of wits, full of twists and turns, building to an unforgettable climax. The night ended in violence and death, as one of us was found murdered.

But who am I?

My name is Elliot Chase, and I’m going to tell you a story unlike any you’ve ever heard.

What the critics say

"Gloriously atmospheric and utterly riveting, this is my favourite Alex Michaelides yet. Readers you are in for a treat! But then what else would you expect from the undisputed master of the twist?"—Lucy Foley, New York Times bestselling author of The Paris Apartment and The Guest List

“Alex Michaelides hits the trifecta with his third novel, The Fury. The highly original story presents the reader with the king of all unreliable narrators, enough twists and turns to power two novels, and a host of characters that bleed right on the page. For fans of erudite, locked room mysteries told with style and theatrical panache, The Fury delivers, on all counts.”—David Baldacci

“A classic, twisting, brilliant murder mystery. A wonderfully drawn cast of characters with a motive to kill for, in a location to die for, keep you guessing until the shocking finale. Clever, and fiendishly fun.”—Chris Whitaker, New York Times bestselling author of We Begin at the End

Didn’t want it to end

Alex Michaelides is the king at making you think you’ve figured everything out, only to totally flip everything you thought you knew on its head and second guess everything. This book was no exception, kept me guessing until the very end. Performance was also excellent!!

Interesting Premise

I thought the premise for this book was very interesting, and I love the setting, but I struggled with just how unreliable Elliot is as the narrator, and it made the story drag on far too long.

A whole new take on the unreliable narrator format

Alex Michaelides has an off-the-wall mind. This is a psychological thriller that has not one, but three or four unreliable narrators. In other words, don't believe anything that you read. The book is dark and chilling, and depicts how the occurrences from childhood forever mould a person's mind. If an individual has a terrible childhood, the lessons that they learn to survive, which could be good or very, very bad, survive into adulthood. The book is intricately plotted, and the characterizations are real and visceral. The plot is full of surprising twists and turns, that will keep readers guessing throughout. Again, don't believe anything you read, and you won't fall down any of the many rabbit holes that are in this book. The book is set on a remote Greek island, and the atmosphere of the island mirrors the plot of this book. I found the book went on a bit long, and I wanted to skip through it off and on throughout, but because I was listening rather than reading, it's harder to skip ahead. If you like twisty thrillers, than you will enjoy this book.

Lots of lies

This was mildly entertaining. Lots of twists and lies and wondering what was real or not. Not my favourite by Thai author but I enjoyed it.

Even better than The Silent Patient and The Maidens!

I had read The Silent Patient and The Maidens by Alex Michaelides but this book is by far the best out of the three. The authors unique way of showing multiple sides of humanity is so well done in this shocking and devastating thriller. The actor/reader was also sublime. Highly recommend!

Slowest thriller ever

Long, confusing, I feel like the author tried too much for this one.. Don’t expect anything like The Silent Patient

Good Author and even better than his last!

I loved this novel. Some exciting twists. The narrator is unreliable but tells you so. I highly recommend

Brilliant!

The Fury by Alex Michaelides is a brilliant murder mystery with a twisty plot delivered in a 5-act, six character play with a first-person narrative. I absolutely loved every second of it. The author's plotting, story arc, and character development are excellent, and Alex Jennings' narration is smooth as silk. The biggest twist comes near the conclusion of the book and is worth its weight in gold.

Excellent listen!

Loved the narration style, character development was great…only mild disappointment was the epilogue. I would recommend this novel.
