Publisher's Summary

In the ruins of civilization, a young girl's kindness and capacity for love will either save humanity - or wipe it out in this USA Today best-selling thriller Joss Whedon calls "heartfelt, remorseless, and painfully human."

Melanie is a very special girl. Dr. Caldwell calls her "our little genius."

Every morning, Melanie waits in her cell to be collected for class. When they come for her, Sergeant keeps his gun pointed at her while two of his people strap her into the wheelchair. She thinks they don't like her. She jokes that she won't bite, but they don't laugh.

Great story. Solid reader.

MR Carey delivers. The slow realization by the main character of her own being, and her efforts to grow, contrast with the downward spirals of the rest of the characters. The sense of doom is relentless, but there's so much happening that hope still persists. Highly recommended for anyone interested in post-apocalyptic fiction or fungi.

Good enough to listen twice!

A great listen! My kids and I enjoyed twice (a year between listens). It is a bit violent and there is some swearing, so not for young kids. The narration is perfect — accent, tempo, and inflection.

Fantastic

A GREAT book, both in terms of story and narration. I adore this book, if you have the chance to not be spoiled, take it. It is so interesting if you don't know what's coming! (Its great even if you do know, so don't worry)

Loved it

This was a surprisingly good listen and it only took a couple of days as I needed to hear more! I loved that it had the first person perspective of Melanie as this makes the book unique to the genre. Narrating was perfect, you won’t be disappointed!

Very refreshing take on the zombie genre

I came at this book with no expectations and came away wishing for more. Not your traditional zombie story per se, but with all of the aspects that you’d expect to make for a blockbuster woven through. I’d be lining up to see it if it was ever adapted to film!

Went in a different direction than expected

From reading the summary and listening to a sample, I thought I knew what kind of book this was going to be. I was very wrong, and I'm glad I was. It's so much more than can be captured in the review, and without giving too much away, the narrated story of the characters feels real and makes even the mundane activities keep your attention. The twists and turns made the book unpredictable without being totally unbelievable, and I thought the ending was different and very well done, it caught me very off guard. #audible1
