About this listen
"Superb."—Oliver Burkeman
A challenge to the tyranny of work and a call to reclaim our lives from its clutches.
From the moment we ask children what they want to “be” when they grow up, we exalt the dream job as if it were life’s ultimate objective. Many entangle their identities with their jobs, with predictable damage to happiness, wellbeing, and even professional success.
In The Good Enough Job, journalist Simone Stolzoff traces how work has come to dominate Americans’ lives—and why we find it so difficult to let go. Based on groundbreaking reporting and interviews with Michelin star chefs, Wall Street bankers, overwhelmed teachers and other workers across the American economy, Stolzoff exposes what we lose when we expect work to be more than a job. Rather than treat work as a calling or a dream, he asks what it would take to reframe work as a part of life rather than the entirety of our lives. What does it mean for a job to be good enough?
Through provocative critique and deep reporting, Stolzoff punctures the myths that keep us chained to our jobs. By exposing the lies we—and our employers—tell about the value of our labor, The Good Enough Job makes the urgent case for reclaiming our lives in a world centered around work.

We are living through a period of unprecedented uncertainty and upheaval in both our personal and professional lives. So it should come as a surprise to exactly no one that trust, human connection, and mental well-being are all on the decline. This may seem like no laughing matter. Yet, the research shows that humor and laughter are among the most valuable tools we have at our disposal for strengthening bonds and relationships, diffusing stress and tension, boosting resilience, and performing when the stakes are high.

Story
Today, burnout and depression are at record levels, driven by a combination of intense workplace competition, oppressively ubiquitous social media encouraging comparisons with others, the quest for elite credentials, and helicopter parenting. Society continually broadcasts the need to want more, and to be perfect. Gathering a wide range of contemporary evidence, Curran calls for both introspection and broader, societal change. He shows what we can do as individuals to resist the modern-day pressure to be perfect, and in so doing, win for ourselves a more purposeful and contented life.

Story
In Thinking with Your Hands, esteemed cognitive psychologist Susan Goldin-Meadow argues that gesture is vital to how we think, learn, and communicate. She shows us, for instance, how the height of our gestures can reveal unconscious bias or how the shape of a student’s gestures can track their mastery of a new concept—even when they’re still giving wrong answers. She compels us to rethink everything from how we set child-development milestones to what’s admissible in a court of law to whether Zoom is an adequate substitute for in-person conversation.

What the critics say
"His straight-shooting style makes for a blistering takedown of American corporate culture. Workaholics would do well to check this out."—Publishers Weekly
“Superb. A fascinating and deeply reported challenge to the idea that our work should—or ever could—be the only center of meaning, self-worth, or community in our lives. The real-life stories fill the reader with the liberating sense that we absolutely could put work back in its place—and that the result would be both richer lives and more effective work.”—Oliver Burkeman, New York Times bestselling author of Four Thousand Weeks
“The Good Enough Job is an incredibly propulsive read, filled with characters whose stories will be at once familiar and astonishing—and it will absolutely challenge you to change the way you think about work.”—Anne Helen Petersen, author of Can’t Even and coauthor of Out of Office

Subtitle nails the point
This week- written, concise book challenges the listener to ask the right questions. Framing as a handful of individual cases, it provides entry points that might resonate with different individuals, but the critical question is: how do I put work in its place in my life?
This is one of the key questions our society needs to answer as we face a period of turmoil and transition.

If you care too much about what happens at work, you need to read this
I really needed this book and after listening to it, I’m glad I found it.
I’m that person. The one who thinks that my performance at work is unequivocally tied to my worth as a person. Why? Society raised me this way. My parents told me I should do something I love. What inevitably happens when you do that is you become so emotionally invested in the outcomes at work that you begin to lose yourself.
A job pays your bills. That is it’s purpose. There is joy to be had at work, but making it the main focus of your existence is cheating yourself. This book explains why.

Really enjoyed this book
The message was very clear and really helped put things in perspective. We need to take a step back to find ourselves and give ourselves permission to focus on what makes us happy. Balancing work and life should be the goal not giving it all to work. Thank you.
