Publisher's Summary

The outrageous and often hilarious autobiography of legendary session musician and lead guitarist and singer of Toto.

No one explodes one of the longest held misconceptions of music history better than Steve Lukather and his band Toto. The dominant sound of the late ‘70s and ‘80s was not punk, but a slick, polished amalgam of rock and R&B first staked out on Boz Scaggs’ Silk Degrees. That album was shaped in large part by the founding members of Toto, who were emerging as the most in-demand elite session crew in LA, and further developed on the band’s self-titled multiplatinum debut. A string of massive hits followed for Toto while Lukather and bandmates David Paich, Jeff Porcaro, and Steve Porcaro also served as creative linchpins on some of the most successful and influential records of the era, including Michael Jackson’s Thriller.

In this incisive memoir, Lukather tells the complete Toto story. He also lifts the lid on what went on behind the closed studio doors, shedding light on the unique creative processes of some of the most legendary names in music: from Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson, Paul McCartney, Stevie Nicks, and Elton John to Miles Davis, Joni Mitchell, Bruce Springsteen, Don Henley, Roger Waters, and Aretha Franklin. Lukather’s extraordinary tale also encompasses the dark side of stardom and the American dream. Frank, engaging, and often hilarious, The Gospel According to Luke is no ordinary rock memoir. It is the real thing.

Loved this book. Can't wait for the next edition.

I'm a huge Toto fan going back to the beginning. The First Toto album was the first I ever purchased and I wore out numerous copies of vinyl and cassettes.

Jeff Porcaro, was and is still is my guide and inspiration on how to play drums. Hearing, Steve reminisce about the early days, the antics, challenges, great times and heartbreak, beginning with Jeff's passing and then sadly others, makes you appreciate the value of health and time. I'd love to see a second volume. Thank you Steve for sharing so sincerely!

Makes you think about life.

I expected a juicy foray into the peak of the rock n roll era, but actually got thinking a lot about life and friendships. I’m getting into the age, where days slowly start to be numbered, and maybe I should reconnect with dear old friends, because you never know.
What an amazing audio experience, and yes, there is still a fair bit of rock n roll story in here. The amazing talent density of the LA area, the early years of Toto, the struggles, the accomplishments … really worth the purchase.

This book is a must listen

If you’re into ‘70’s and ‘80’s rock especially you’re gonna love this listen. The ONLY way to feel this book is for Steve to tell it himself. He’ll make you cry and laugh right out loud. He’s a little crazy and it’s clear he’s passionate about his craft, respected by all the greats and an amazing musician. He absolutely loves what he does and it shines through with every story he tells. I hope he writes more….in between touring and travelling the world!

Great 80’s nostalgia

Narration by Luke makes the stories come alive. Would have liked more dirt on his contemporaries, but it’s not that kind of book.

Good but...

Some great stories indeed but way too many thank you’s to people which at times sounded like an award ceremony speech. Book could have used more stories that would readers realize things they never knew. Most of the stuff is already out there. But good read overall. Gets boring three quarters of a way.

One of a kind.

Listening to the man himself describing his life stories. Was truly a once in a lifetime experience. How many people can say they sat across a table with the guy, and he tells you his life story? Well now you can because it’s exactly what this feels like. Enjoyed every minute with the one and only Steve Lukather!
