About this listen
From sourcing rare ingredients to solving crimes, "this appealing detective serves up nuggets of culinary trivia and wry food humor" (People).
They call him the gourmet detective; the only thing sharper than his mind is his palate. When chefs need a rare ingredient, an ancient wine, or simply a new idea to gain that extra Michelin-star boost, they come to the detective's cozy London office and plead for his help. For top-notch cooking, he is always happy to lend his taste buds to the cause.
Now Raymond Lefebvre, executive chef at one of London's finest French restaurants, has asked for the detective's help with a bit of kitchen espionage. Lefebvre's crosstown rival is winning international accolades cooking a dish called Oiseau Royal, and Lefebvre wants the recipe. Getting it takes the detective deep into the Circle of Careme, where the most elite chefs in Britain gather to swap recipes, techniques, and gossip. But when the chefs of Careme start to die, the detective starts to salivate. There is no finer appetizer than murder.

Outdated busy easy read
The story is a product of its time. I read this on vacation and the overt sexism was cringe worthy but the plot was well put together.
Narration was on point.

And they lived happily ever after
Good story but it left me a bit bored at times so I fast forwarded to the last few chapters to get through it. Ended on a happy note.

stopped at chapter 12
I must have only been half listening in the beginning as I didn't realize how non private eye the lead was, and that doesn't bode well in a murder mystery called the gourmet detective. As soon as the murder occurred and the police came in, his character read as a whiny, scaredy cat. He has NO detective instincts or confidence, and so, for me, who was looking for a cozy mystery, solved by a PI or amateur sleuth, this will not do.
Additionally, the narrator kept messing up on the voices he had chosen for each character so it was confusing to have the police detective's voice read one way in a conversation and then like another character's voice in a second part of the same conversation.
