“A page turner.... An absorbing and emotionally riveting story about what it’s like to live during times of crisis.” (The New York Times Book Review)
A dazzling new novel of friendship and redemption in the face of tragedy and loss set in 1980s Chicago and contemporary Paris, by the acclaimed author Rebecca Makkai.
In 1985, Yale Tishman, the development director for an art gallery in Chicago, is about to pull off an amazing coup, bringing in an extraordinary collection of 1920s paintings as a gift to the gallery. Yet as his career begins to flourish, the carnage of the AIDS epidemic grows around him. One by one, his friends are dying and after his friend Nico's funeral, the virus circles closer and closer to Yale himself. Soon the only person he has left is Fiona, Nico's little sister.
Thirty years later, Fiona is in Paris tracking down her estranged daughter who disappeared into a cult. While staying with an old friend, a famous photographer who documented the Chicago crisis, she finds herself finally grappling with the devastating ways AIDS affected her life and her relationship with her daughter. The two intertwining stories take us through the heartbreak of the eighties and the chaos of the modern world, as both Yale and Fiona struggle to find goodness in the midst of disaster.

Story
Even through the roar and effervescence of the 1920s, everyone in New York has heard of Benjamin and Helen Rask. He is a legendary Wall Street tycoon; she is the daughter of eccentric aristocrats. Together, they have risen to the very top of a world of seemingly endless wealth—all as a decade of excess and speculation draws to an end. But at what cost have they acquired their immense fortune? This is the mystery at the center of Bonds, a successful 1937 novel that all of New York seems to have read. Yet there are other versions of this tale of privilege and deceit.

What the critics say
“Makkai knits themes of loss, betrayal, friendship and survival into a powerful story of people struggling to keep their humanity in dire circumstances.” (People Magazine)
“Cultural revolutions of the past painfully reverberate in Rebecca Makkai’s deft third novel, The Great Believers, which captures both the devastation of the AIDS crisis in 1980s Chicago and the emotional aftershocks of those losses.” (Vogue)

Great albeit sad book
Touching story, great performance, loved this book and it’s story. Yale (sorry for misspelling) was one of those characters that gets under your skin in a good way, making you miss him when you’re finished reading.

A haunting story
I found it to be a haunting story of a time I know of but was too young to experience. Listening to the latter half during COVID-19 was surreal.

Poignant, Nostalgic, Timeless
Written with such skill and sensitivity. Makkai deftly threads her way through 20th Century history to create a through line from the world wars to the AIDs crisis.
The characters transcend tropes to tell stories of those who survive under unimaginable circumstances.

The most beautiful book I’ve read to date
This is a story about life—how, still, after terror and trauma, love prevails. Like a tree-leaf in autumn refusing to fall.

Broke my heart
I was there. I lived in Chicago with my brother and our friends through this crisis, one friend after another getting sick and then leaving us, until there was one. The author takes you right there...then back to the present in a beautiful and seamless weaving of a story that needed to be told. Thank you Rebecca. Xo. Fiona.
