Publisher's Summary

Set in the late 1700s, a tale of magic and fate, triumph and heartbreak, and the powerful bonds between mothers and daughters unfolds in this spellbinding novel from a master storyteller.

Brittany, 1762

There hasn’t been a witch born in the Orchière clan for generations. According to the elders, that line is dead, leaving the clan vulnerable to the whims of superstitious villagers and the prejudices of fearmongering bishops.

Ursule Orchière has been raised on stories of the great witches of the past. But the only magic she knows is the false spells her mother weaves over the gullible women who visit their fortune-telling caravan. Everything changes when Ursule comes of age and a spark of power flares to life. Thrilled to be chosen, she has no idea how magic will twist and shape her future.

Guided by an ancient grimoire and the whispers of her ancestors, Ursule is destined to walk the same path as the great witches of old. But first, the Orchière magical lineage must survive. And danger hovers over her, whether it’s the bloodlust of the mob or the flames of the pyre.

Return to the world of A Secret History of Witches with the bewitching tale of Ursule Orchière and her discovery of magical abilities that will not only change the course of her life but every generation that comes after her.

Equally beautiful is the writing and the reading.

It’s a well written story of strength and love and the incredible spirit of women. Read as beautifully as I’ve heard a book read. Masterful.

Great story

The story was engaging. I would have liked more—years spread out of the granddaughters” lives. The narration was amazing most of the time—but sometimes seemed unnecessarily dramatic on occasion. Still, all in all a 5.

Great story

Loved this book but not the narration style. Her voice often rose to anxiety in places where it was not called for and was very distracting.

Interesting and entertaining

I have enjoyed all of the books by this author and narrator! The characters are interesting and the narrator does a great job of the different voices.

Loved it

I really enjoyed this story. Loved immersing myself in a different time and people. The narrator was outstanding (except the very irritating baby voices). I recommend this book and will seek out others by this author

So good !

One of those books you never want to end … I finished it was faster then I wanted to lol … the Secret history of witches was my favourite book to read so it was pretty awesome to listen to this one ! (And actually it would be fine to listen to this one first).

Epic story of the most powerful witch of the clan!

An epic story spanning an entire incredible lifetime of the most powerful witch of the entire Oshierre line. I fell into this book and devoured it. It was truly one of my favourite books so far this year. This was my first Louisa Morgan book but right away after finishing the book I began “A Secret History of Witches” of which this book was a prequel. I have been practising witch for years and oddly enough I was gifted a Beautiful smoky quartz rounded and smooth on top and with the matrix on the bottom just like the scrying crystal in the book!! 😊. It’s my favourite thing to rub my fingers over my magickal crystal while listening to these books. I think anybody , witch or otherwise, will truly love this book.

Great Novels

My biggest complaint is with the idiocy of the girl characters as children.

They are easily frightened " oh mama! oh! Why!" Saying shit out loud that someone"born old" retitle have the sense to sit up about. Not only that but the teenagers have no reverence, or respect/admiration or interest in the family gift of FUCKING Magic. Magic!

Every girl is like... "I don't want to, in not interested, ugh," Yes SUCH a hassle to have ritual and rites and power....

And then, once they have the book, the stone and the power, even the one's that are gifted, they obsessively use their power to center men or babies and never to connect with other witches, other lines of their families, never to see a blessed life or true love so they can fulfill a destiny it find the one, they don't use the craft to improve their futures.

Its pretty maddening that they have no concept of strategy and repeatedly make stupid blunders that are easily avoided with an ounce of self preservation. If only it was scared on their souls by their elders when they were young.....

It could have been so much more!

I was expecting this book to be full of wonder and marvels and delight. I love this Brittany, and I love history, and I love stories about witchcraft. This book had everything going for it. But good Lord, it just fell flat. None of the characters were very interesting, and the story just plotted along without any mystery or beauty. Such a disappointment. And the performance was annoying and painful to listen to.
