Publisher's Summary

Mexican Gothic meets Rebecca in this debut supernatural suspense novel, set in the aftermath of the Mexican War of Independence, about a remote house, a sinister haunting, and the woman pulled into their clutches...

During the overthrow of the Mexican government, Beatriz’s father was executed and her home destroyed. When handsome Don Rodolfo Solórzano proposes, Beatriz ignores the rumors surrounding his first wife’s sudden demise, choosing instead to seize the security that his estate in the countryside provides. She will have her own home again, no matter the cost.

But Hacienda San Isidro is not the sanctuary she imagined.

When Rodolfo returns to work in the capital, visions and voices invade Beatriz’s sleep. The weight of invisible eyes follows her every move. Rodolfo’s sister, Juana, scoffs at Beatriz’s fears—but why does she refuse to enter the house at night? Why does the cook burn copal incense at the edge of the kitchen and mark the doorway with strange symbols? What really happened to the first Doña Solórzano?

Beatriz only knows two things for certain: Something is wrong with the hacienda. And no one there will save her.

Desperate for help, she clings to the young priest, Padre Andrés, as an ally. No ordinary priest, Andrés will have to rely on his skills as a witch to fight off the malevolent presence haunting the hacienda and protect the woman for whom he feels a powerful, forbidden attraction. But even he might not be enough to battle the darkness.

Far from a refuge, San Isidro may be Beatriz’s doom.

What the critics say

“A thing of uncanny, chilling beauty. Hauntings, exorcisms, incantations, forbidden love — The Hacienda transports one to a world where love triumphs over demons.”
The New York Times

“[A] gothic tale of doomed love and vengeful spirits."
The Washington Post

"Cañas clearly knows the genre, alternately deploying and subverting haunted house tropes. The result is a brilliant contribution to the new wave of postcolonial Gothics. Readers won’t want to miss this."

Gripping Gothic story

The story was a Gothic style thriller beautifully executed by the narrators. I was drawn in to another world that gripped me and wouldn't let go until the very end. Even after I was done listening, my mind drifted back over the story. This is one that I will enjoy listening to many times.

A hauntingly beautiful story

I love haunted houses. Houses that are characters in their own right, like the hacienda San Isidro.
The story reminded me a lot of Rebecca, but leaning more into the haunting and ghost Rebecca lacked. The gothic atmosphere, the Mexican backstory, and author’s style made it a book I would definitely recommend in spooky, gloomy weather. The audiobook was extraordinary, very well narrated.

Isabel Cañas 🥰

This was such a good read. I read the book initially and I loved it, and then I decided to listen to it. Picked up on things the second time that I didn’t pick up on the first time.

A Spectacular Ghost Story

An excellent blend of historical settings, haunted houses, angry spirits, and forbidden romance, THE HACIENDA is one of my favourite spooky books of the year.

Agreeing to marry a man she doesn’t love to protect her future, Beatriz moves into a beautiful hacienda with a dark past. Once strange and alarming events start occurring, she finds herself working with a young priest names Andreas whose complicated past opens her to a whole new realm of possibility and danger.

Beatriz is a great lead character with grace, resolve, and composure. She is the exact sort of character I enjoy following in these stories and proved to be stronger than even she believed. Andreas is a priest with a dark secret, one that I did not expect and immediately enthralled me to him. The relationship he has with Beatriz is sweeping and delightfully slow burn, and one I wanted to see more of.

The book is filled with creepy occurrences and danger. The spirit is clearly an angry one and manifested in terrifying ways as Beatriz and Andreas tried to discover the truth behind the haunting. Add in fantastic writing and an immersive experience perfect for anyone who loves historical haunted house stories.

I dare you to try it as an Audiobook. At Night.

Loved the voice of the female narrator who made the rising dread and fear of the main character, Beatrice, come alive! This book is frightening and scary with its supernatural story of a vengeful ghost/murder mystery. It also incorporates Mexican history and class relations too.

Definitely my fav listen of this year.
