Publisher's Summary

New York Times and internationally best-selling author Jussi Adler-Olsen delivers an exhilarating mystery in the Department Q series, featuring Detective Carl Mørck and his enigmatic assistants, Assad and Rose.

In the middle of his usual hard-won morning nap in the basement of police headquarters, Carl Mørck, head of Department Q, receives a call from a colleague working on the Danish island of Bornholm. Carl is dismissive when he realizes that a new case is being foisted on him, but a few hours later, he receives some shocking news that leaves his headstrong assistant Rose more furious than usual. Carl has no choice but to lead Department Q into the tragic cold case of a vivacious seventeen-year-old girl who vanished from school, only to be found dead hanging high up in a tree. The investigation will take them from the remote island of Bornholm to a strange sun-worshipping cult, where Carl, Assad, Rose, and newcomer Gordon attempt to stop a string of new murders and a skilled manipulator who refuses to let anything - or anyone - get in the way.

Best of the series so far

I was very happy that Mr. Adler-Osen returned to his usual style after a departure in the last novel, which I personally felt wasn't great. The story unwinds with a masterful eye to detail and pacing that sets his work apart. The department Q character backstories unwind a bit more, just enough to dangle new possibilities and intrigue. If you've also listened to all the previous works in the series, you will note a similar formula that unfolds, which I like, other than the way they all end. I don't want to give out details, but it seems there's one way of thinking and pacing that carries the books to the very end, and then someone else takes over, and now we're in a Bond movie, from the 70's, with Bond tied to the chair as the laser slowly creeps closer and closer. Maybe in the next novel the murderer will go quietly?

Love the works. Keep them coming.

Best one yet

This was a great novel with many twists and turns along the way. The characters are really coming to full life and the undercurrents are really interesting. More honest humour which deepens feelings and doesn’t detract. And narration was spectacular!!
