New York Times bestselling author Rachel Hawkins returns with a twisted new gothic suspense about an infamous heiress and the complicated inheritance she left behind.

THERE’S NOTHING AS GOOD AS THE RICH GONE BAD

When Ruby McTavish Callahan Woodward Miller Kenmore dies, she’s not only North Carolina’s richest woman, she’s also its most notorious. The victim of a famous kidnapping as a child and a widow four times over, Ruby ruled the tiny town of Tavistock from Ashby House, her family’s estate high in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

But in the aftermath of her death, her adopted son, Camden, wants little to do with the house or the money—and even less to do with the surviving McTavishes. Instead, he rejects his inheritance, settling into a normal life as an English teacher in Colorado and marrying Jules, a woman just as eager to escape her own messy past.

Ten years later, his uncle’s death pulls Cam and Jules back into the family fold at Ashby House. Its views are just as stunning as ever, its rooms just as elegant, but the legacy of Ruby is inescapable.

And as Ashby House tightens its grip on Jules and Camden, questions about the infamous heiress come to light. Was there any truth to the persistent rumors following her disappearance as a girl? What really happened to those four husbands, who all died under mysterious circumstances? And why did she adopt Cam in the first place? Soon, Jules and Cam realize that an inheritance can entail far more than what’s written in a will—and that the bonds of family stretch far beyond the grave.

What the critics say

"Hawkins does an excellent job keeping readers off-balance throughout. Nonstop twists and surprises make this a true thrill ride…a delicious tale of murder, greed, and the ties that bind."—Publishers Weekly

"Rachel Hawkins delivers another read-in-a-sitting knockout. The Heiress has it all—murder, secrets, Gothic vibes, and one of the most deliciously twisted families ever put to page. I loved it!"—Riley Sager, New York Times bestselling author of The Only One Left

"Featuring unreliable narrators and twists throughout, Hawkins' latest continues her reign as the queen of slow-burn domestic thrillers. This is a page-turner that readers will find hard to put down and is perfect for fans of stories with ambiguous morals and dysfunctional families."—Booklist

Really enjoyed every minute of this book

Great story, good narration - I loved turning this book on every day for an hour as I drive. Story kept me interested the whole way even though it wasn’t as thrilling as some books but definitely a solid and very enjoyable story.

On my Favs List

I really enjoyed the journey this story to me on. The story was well written and - possible spoiler alert- the character Ruby, you can’t hate her. It’s so well written that for most of her choices, you get why she would do what she did. Morally correct- no, but human nature justifying decisions yes. Just a very interesting psychology to me

Good & Evil is in All

The character development had me liking some characters until I became distrustful and disturbed by them, and disliking others until I felt empathy for them; the story unfolds in a way that challenged me to accept both the 'good' & the 'bad' in each character; there was a point in the story when I just wanted to skip ahead to hear the ending or somewhere near the ending, to console myself that it would all turn out ok! When I realized that, I realized just how much this is like the various parts of me... I don't really WANT to acknowledge the parts of me I dislike, I'd rather skip over those parts, and yet, they are there and equally part of the story that is me.... I enjoyed this story, the audible performance, the writing, and the challenge to come to terms with the good AND the 'bad'.

Fun story, average narration

The story was fun. I found the narration a bit annoying. I find the stereotyping of "rich people voices" to be a bit silly and implausible but the story was pretty good.

Loved This!

This listen was great! I am starting to look for more unusual story lines that are still suspenseful, mysterious and smart. This covers all that and then some. The narrators were great, especially the voice of Ruby. The story was full of twisty, surprising, unexpected, even horrific events somehow made perfectly acceptable by a charming logic explained in such a way that you have to ask yourself... what would you have done? This held my attention to the very last 'page'. A 'fun' thriller. 😌
