if I can opt to listen to a story narrated by its author every time, I would. The perspective of the story teller is so great in knowing how the story is meant to be perceived. I have always enjoyed this story and appreciate hearing it.

An author's touch

This is probably going to be a controversial take, but I found this book to essentially be the first movie, but with less elements. The biggest difference is that the films are all, more or less, focused around the cenobites, whereas this book is mostly all about Frank. The book is obviously masterly written for its time, but by this point we are here for the cenobite lore. Of course the cenobites were fleshed out more by Barker when he created the first film, but in this book, they come off as little more than a street gang side plot.

First movie, but less

Barker was excellent, loved his preformance. I am coming off listening to Amityville Horror and this is everything I wished that would be. Absolutely intense and perfect length.

Thrilling and Chilling

Barker is my favourite writer. I’ve never encountered prose that flows as eloquently and seamlessly as his. His skill with language is amplified by the subject matter he dedicates it to; the juxtaposition of beautiful writing depicting horrific material is striking and compelling.

It’s always a bonus when the author narrates their own work, and Barker’s unique, immersing voice elevates this already haunting work to a whole other level.

I mean, come on man, it’s Hellraiser! What else could you hope for?

An Absolute Masterwork

I prefer Clive Barker to Stephen King because he's more to the point. This is not a long winded fluff piece. It says what it needs to say and moves on.

Great story. It felt as if I was watching Hellraiser in my head the whole time!
