Publisher's Summary

Jasper Detchard is a disgraced British officer, now selling his blade to the highest bidder. Currently that's Michael Elphberg, half-brother to the King of Ruritania. Michael wants the throne for himself, and Jasper is one of the scoundrels he hires to help him take it. But when Michael makes his move, things don't go entirely to plan - and the penalty for treason is death.

Rupert of Hentzau is Michael's newest addition to his sinister band of henchmen. Charming, lethal, and intolerably handsome, Rupert is out for his own ends - which seem to include getting Jasper into bed. But Jasper needs to work out what Rupert's really up to amid a maelstrom of plots, swordfights, scheming, impersonation, desire, betrayal, and murder.

Nobody can be trusted. Everyone has a secret. And love is the worst mistake you can make.

Contains mature themes.

Unexpectedly Funny

I wish this was longer!! This book is if Game of Thrones was set in a small German kingdom in the mid 1800’s, told in the driest, most sarcastic voice of a jaded English mercenary. Sooooo funny—pokes so much fun at the stupidity and flailing failures of aristocracy and the systems that hold them up. If a coup was also a Shakespearean comedy of manners.

absolutely fantastic!

What fun! What adventure! I'm so glad I finally listened to this book. A rip-roaring yarn with brash and dynamic characters. I read the reviews that said "not a romance" and I say Pshaw! Not a romance for milksops, perhaps, but a romance for those who don't need a marriage-minded monogamous settled-down-with-kids kind of relationship for a happy ending. Good gawd, they're still enjoying each other 20 years later! (and others, too - wink wink nudge nudge) That's romantic. I didn't read the original book this is a re-write of, and who cares - it sounds terribly boring compared to this one, with all its treachery and scheming and villains and twists and turns. Have some fun, set aside your twenty-first century moralizing and get your buckles swashed!
