A red witch in hiding....

Thirteen years fleeing witch hunters and the looming threat of death. Nineteen-year-old Remy knows she is possibly the last red witch alive, and she is determined to stay that way. The Northern Court King has slaughtered her home court and placed a bounty on red witch heads.

When four fae warriors enter her tavern refuge, Remy tries to flee, but her magic isn’t strong enough to stop a fae prince on a mission. The handsome Prince Hale of the Eastern Kingdom wants to stop a war with the Northern Court before his kingdom befalls the same fate as Remy’s. He needs a red witch, and Remy may be the only person alive who can help him. Can she really trust Prince Hale? Can her fallen court be resurrected from the evil clutches of the Northern Court King? For the chance to save herself, her people, and help defeat the Northern King, Remy must put her faith in Hale and his companions on a dangerous quest to find lost relics.

The High Mountain Court is the first book in the thrilling fantasy saga The Five Crowns of Okrith. Expect danger, intrigue, and thrilling passion as Remy journeys to save the kingdom she holds most dear.

Includes bonus stories The Witch of Crimson Arrows and Haastmouth Beach.

Incredible narration

The story is great, the writing is lovely. At first I didn’t think I loved the narration but at some point I realize it’s AMAZING, the accents are DIFFERENT and I think we need more of this!! Obsessed.

Good

I enjoyed this story. It’s nice to see a different perspective of Fae culture and their courts. It was a bit predictable in spots but had a steady build up of plot. I look forward to the next one!

refreshing

The magic system and the way the people respond to it has a lot of depth and that shows through right away. the character introductions are intriguing and I appreciate the slow development which feel a lot more natural to me than the sudden shifts a lot of heroes have out of nowhere.

Read this one with your eyes

This could have been so much better with a different narrator. If you're into SJM or Laurie Forest this will fill a gap before their next books come out nicely, but my listening experience was definitely tainted by the narration.

Well worth your time!

This book helped a ten hour drive feel like four. I enjoyed all of the characters and the narrator did an absolutely incredible job!! I wish there had been more detail in places rather than some of the repetition, but all in all I thought it was a great story.

Great start to the series

Read on eBook + Audiobook
4 stars, 7.14 on CAWPILE
9/10 Narration

The High Mountain Court is a good start to a five book fantasy romance series that following a different couple in each book. The beginning of this book was the weakest part for me as it felt like a lot of the characters were shaping up to be cookie cutter cliches meant to fit in a specific trope with a slightly lackluster romance. But as the story went on the characters got more depth and became more three dimensional. I liked the worldbuilding in this book. I could tell Mulford put effort into understanding each court and the different people that live there, what magics do what. This book sets up the world of Okrith perfectly for the series. The weakest point of this book was the romance. It felt a little rushed, the main characters were in love and declaring their undying devotions to each other too quickly. I think this is due to the fact that this is 350 page book with a lot of plot, worldbuilding and romance to balance. I was hoping to see more of the relationship between Remy and Hale in future books but I learned that each book follows different couples and new POVs. I do love all the representation in this book from different sexualities and gender identities to body types to skin tones. Though I do wish the fact that Remy is bisexual was a bit more explicit in this book rather than mention it as a throw away line in the prequel novella. It feels like it was added in later to increase diversity. I am definitely more interested in the other books in this series as the pairings seem more my taste than this book, which is a little too basic.

Blah

Characters had no depth, it was hard to identify with each of them. He wasn’t described at all, just suddenly fell totally in love with her. It was a struggle to get to the end.

So boring...

This was honestly one of the most boring stories I have ever read. I couldn't even get through the whole book. I kept hoping that it would get better, but it never did. The descriptions were bad, the narration was annoying, and the characters were insufferable and one dimensional. Just no.
