Rare-book dealer Ashlyn Greer’s affinity for books extends beyond the intoxicating scent of old paper, ink, and leather. She can feel the echoes of the books’ previous owners—an emotional fingerprint only she can read. When Ashlyn discovers a pair of beautifully bound volumes that appear to have never been published, her gift quickly becomes an obsession. Not only is each inscribed with a startling incrimination, but the authors, Hemi and Belle, tell conflicting sides of a tragic romance.

Caught me off guard
I love when I think I’ve figured a story out and then it takes a sharp turn and then just as I get my equilibrium back, it turns again!!

Enjoyable listen, but...
I liked this book. I liked the story for what it was, and it was very enjoyable to listen to while I was busy with other things. However, I didn't like one of the characters or the way they justified their behaviour whenever it was their chapter. This person is obviously not a friend, but is somehow the hero, that was annoying.
The scenes in the lodge at the beginning read like a stage play - the way characters enter and exit, they were obviously being introduced and set up for the coming story, so for that reason the ending was expected, not shocking.
Still well done, overall.

Orientated? ORIENTATED?!!
The narration was good. Though I actually looked for a hard copy (not very hard, mind you) to see whether it actually said “orientated” or whether the narrator just pronounced it wrong.. it’s a word that Lucy uses frequently and every time, it as pungent as mic feedback.
OK - so now that that is off my chest, on to the real review. This book WAS NOT MY CUP OF TEA. I was looking forward to an adventure with a bit of mystery. The adventure and mystery were minimal and predictable. This is more a story about the history of the lifelong friendships of the 4 women on a hiking vacation. This history is told through reminiscences of the four. The reminiscences occur at the most absurd times such as when one of the friends is in mortal and immediate danger and her thought wander off to the secret friendship she shared with another of the friend’s spouse. I may have been able to overlook this if I have a fuck about these musings. I did not.

Horrible title!!
I guess I was expecting actual hiking. You know because of the title. But there was so little hiking and what was mentioned obviously was written by someone who does not hike and did not bother researching it either. Also, audible does not offer refunds even if you only listen to two chapters or even one tenth of the book.
