Ted Wallace is an old, sour, womanising, cantankerous, whisky-sodden beast of a failed poet and drama critic, but he has his faults too. Fired from his newspaper, months behind on his alimony payments and disgusted with a world that undervalues him, Ted seeks a few months repose and free drink at Swafford Hall, the country mansion of his old friend Lord Logan. But strange things have been going on at Swafford. Miracles. Healings. Phenomena beyond the comprehension of a mud-caked hippopotamus like Ted. This was a most enjoyable novel. In particular, we enjoy the narration by Stephen Fry himself. It really added to the story.

Most enjoyable - sorry when it was over.

As a big fan of Mr. Fry, I find it a great pleasure to listen to his book narrated by himself.

Great performance

When I first read the summary I was expecting something quite different. So funny in places I was laughing out loud, one specific part had me groaning and cringing hard.
I usually listen to audiobooks on 1.5-2x speed, had to slow down for this one though.

Funny and unexpected

Had me laughing out loud the entire time. Witty, crass, and surprisingly insightful. I highly recommend.

Hilarious

Stephen Fry doesn’t disappoint. His writing is so engaging and entertaining, and the story is just fabulous and fun. There’s a moment where you may go - wtf?? But honestly it’s really worth it! Wasn’t at all what I expected but was super enjoyable. Wish he had 10 more of these on offer, can’t get enough of his writing, it’s excellent.

Entertaining, surprising, delightful!
