Publisher's Summary

An instant New York Times bestseller!

“This is an absolute, can’t-put-it-down thriller. . . . It’s truly a wild ride that had me flying through chapter after chapter—which I think is the perfect way to kick off your year of reading.”—Reese Witherspoon (Reese’s Book Club Pick January 2023)

Armed with only hazy memories, a woman who long ago witnessed her friend’s sudden, mysterious death, and has since spent her life trying to forget, sets out to track down answers. What she uncovers, deep in the woods, is hardly to be believed. . . .

Maya was a high school senior when her best friend, Aubrey, dropped dead in front of the enigmatic man named Frank whom they’d been spending time with all summer.

Seven years later, Maya lives in Boston with a loving boyfriend and is kicking the secret addiction that has allowed her to cope with what happened years ago, the gaps in her memories, and the lost time that she can’t account for. But her past comes rushing back when she comes across a recent YouTube video in which a young woman suddenly keels over and dies in a diner while sitting across from none other than Frank. Plunged into the trauma that has defined her life, Maya heads to her Berkshires hometown to relive that fateful summer—the influence Frank once had on her and the obsessive jealousy that nearly destroyed her friendship with Aubrey.

At her mother’s house, she excavates fragments of her past and notices hidden messages in her deceased Guatemalan father’s book that didn’t stand out to her earlier. To save herself, she must understand a story written before she was born, but time keeps running out, and soon, all roads are leading back to Frank’s cabin. . . .

Utterly unique and captivating, The House in the Pines keeps you guessing about whether we can ever fully confront the past and return home.

Meh!

Would have been a good short story. Predictable. Character could have gone many ways - good persona with complex issues. The plot was too simple for her.

Not fully launched

The story premise was great however I don’t feel it was fully executed. Would have liked to have seen the ending wrapped up better. A lot left to the imagination

Nope

It’s a really strange story. It focuses too much on the main charters family history that serves no purpose in the telling of the story.
I found myself rolling my eyes quit often
It’s not really a thriller. More so, something you want to be over with …soon.
Didn’t work for me

Skip…

I really wanted to like this book. I appreciated the references to Guatemalan history and culture but that tied with the mystery plot seemed like trying to make a whole lot happen and missing the mark. The twist was underwhelming and the ending didn’t provide the closure I expected.

Waste of time

Overall this was a waste of time. A weak story that was poorly narrated and was a chore to get through.

Fairly Average

This was a bit of a weird one, I keep losing interest, and the "twist" wasn't as exciting as I wanted it to be. I managed to get through, and, while it wasn't the best book I've ever bought, it wasn't the worst.

Compelling. Easy listening

A really good story. Unlike a lot of thrillers/mysteries it took me a second even with the clues to figure out what was happening. Original and well developed. I liked the characters and the ending. Even though I’d wished it to be more finished.
Avid mystery listeners will not be disappointed. Narration and story development was great.
Worth the credit and the listener. I’ll seek out this author over and over again.

Not my cup of tea.

I just didn’t enjoy this book. I finished it but it felt so predictable to me. I’m sure others will love it but I didn’t.
