Publisher's Summary

“Don’t go in the guest bedroom.” A shadow falls on Douglas Garrick’s face as he touches the door with his fingertips. “My wife...she’s very ill.” As he continues showing me their incredible penthouse apartment, I have a terrible feeling about the woman behind closed doors. But I can’t risk losing this job—not if I want to keep my darkest secret safe....

It’s hard to find an employer who doesn’t ask too many questions about my past. So I thank my lucky stars that the Garricks miraculously give me a job, cleaning their stunning penthouse with views across the city and preparing fancy meals in their shiny kitchen. I can work here for a while, stay quiet until I get what I want.

It’s almost perfect. But I still haven’t met Mrs Garrick, or seen inside the guest bedroom. I’m sure I hear her crying. I notice spots of blood around the neck of her white nightgowns when I’m doing laundry. And one day I can’t help but knock on the door. When it gently swings open, what I see inside changes everything....

That’s when I make a promise. After all, I’ve done this before. I can protect Mrs. Garrick while keeping my own secrets locked up safe.

Douglas Garrick has done wrong. He is going to pay. It’s simply a question of how far I’m willing to go....

Anyone who loves The Perfect Marriage by Jeneva Rose, The Woman in the Window, and Gone Girl will be totally hooked! This book can also be enjoyed as a stand-alone.

Good but first book better

This was a good book and had expected twists and turns but I had to pick my jaw off the floor in the first book. No shock value like that in this one. Story still good and worth a listen

First book I enjoyed. This one was awful

Unless you are into the YA category and enjoy basic, bland dialogue with obnoxious accents and a heroine that doesn’t inspire even the tiniest bit of intrigue - I’d give this one a pass. I did enjoy the first book, however.

This one was so bad that I am off this author and will not be listening to anymore of her titles even though I had originally planned to.

Just as the other reviews state.

I enjoyed this novel but not as much as the first book in this series. That seems to be the consensus with the reviews. Milley certainly finds herself in hot water often!

If you liked the first book you will love this one

As my title says, if you liked the first book in the series, you will love this book too. I thought at first this was going to be a rehashed version of the first book, but no, the reveal was amazing and I did not see it coming. And there are still some things that made me go hmmm.

I love the narration style, the pace, everything about it.

I do suggest you listen to the first book first though if you haven't before you listen to this one. I am definitely going to listen to the next one now. Loving this series!

Great book

This was a really good book :) , at times I was kindve annoyed at the narrator, but wasn’t too much , that I couldn’t enjoy the book . There’s great twists in the story , even tho I guessed it , it wasn’t something that was glaringly obvious. So it was still a great shock when the story unfolded , because i wasn’t exactly sure where it was going . Good story ..

Great twists and turns

Overall great, narration spot on, but there were parts that felt a bit forced in the story.

Another great story

I was hesitant about spending a credit on this book, but her other one was so well done that I took a chance. I am very happy I did. The story was great, narration was pretty good. Well worth the credit and read!

"Adequate" Follow-Up

Freida McFadden offers another tale in the mindblowing experiences of ex-con, one-time avenger/abused-woman-crusader, and professional housekeeper Wilhemina "Millie" Calloway - turned into a fury-driven vigilante when confronted with abusive husbands/boyfriends (not above actually committing "justifiable" murder when prompted).
In this installment in Millie's life story, she meets a woman ('Wendy Garrick') secluded in her own household under the thumb of a powerful sadistic husband. Drama ensues.
The twisty-turny plot is well-planned, and the writing is quite good - but McFadden is guilty of stretching the premise too far. She should invest in new characters.

Fortuitously for audiobook afficianados: Reader Lauryn Allman turns in an outstanding narration performance (her subtle New Yawk accent for the Millie character is truly pitch perfect). If you are given the choice between getting a text version of the book or this Hachette Audio recording, choose this one any day of the week.

Despite truly praiseworthy production values, however, I can't rate 'The Housemaid's Secret' any higher than 8 stars out of 10. It's a weaker book than the first in the series, and the repetitively kneejerk violent Millie Calloway character is both unlikable and more and more implausible.
The book is definitely worth a listen (and I can recommend it).. but I won't be continuing the series. Suspending disbelief is just getting too hard.
