Publisher's Summary

I cast my eyes over the impressive meal I’ve cooked and the half-empty crystal wine glasses. As our guests smile graciously, I squeeze my husband’s shoulder. It’s vital I get his friends to like me. To believe this version of me. Because I’ll do anything to stop them learning the truth…

Ever since I met my handsome husband Dr Gabe Bonneville, I started playing the role of the perfect housewife. He works hard as a surgeon, so I look after our home, and throw elaborate dinner parties with champagne cocktails for his best friends Hugh and Anita. He’s my safe place and my chance to have the family I’ve always wanted.

I’ve managed to hide the mornings when I wake up and see a face in the shadows. I haven’t told Gabe the truth about the woman who raised me, or told him about the therapy I’ve been getting so my secrets stay hidden in the dark. I haven’t questioned his past so he doesn’t ask about mine. I see the way Anita looks at him sometimes, but I’ll never say a word.

Until the letter arrives at the front door. The beautiful, expensive card shakes in my hand as I read the neat black handwriting.

Someone knows I’m not just a housewife. And the lies I’ve told will be all that’s left when I disappear…

I love Dan Riley

I am sad that the series is done and I've heard all 7 books now. I've come to look forward to his antics and backstories.

Passable Missing Persons Case(?)

Anna-Lou Weatherley leans heavily into "secrets kept" for this Mystery-Thriller. Darcie Bonneville - a prominent neurosurgeon's wife - disappears after discovering a note marked "FOUND YOU". Weatherley then embarks on an elucidation of her life told in multiple timelines with admirable drip-drip-drip revelations. While an entertaining narrative, this Dan Riley episode didn't captivate me as much as other entries in the series. Darcie just wasn't all that interesting.

As to presentation: Reader James Lailey performs up to his usual standards in terms of diction, timbre, cadence, and tone.. but falls slightly short with his voice-acting on this project (exhibiting an almost incomprehensible Scottish Brogue, for example). I have definitely heard better from Mr. Lailey.

Altogether, 'The Housewife's Secret' is the weakest of the 'Detective Dan Riley' series of books imo - meriting a mere 7 stars out of 10 - but it's still worth a listen (especially if you can get it off of the 'Plus' menu). Maybe the characters will grab you more than they did me.. but there isn't as much investigation/mystery in the book as Weatherley customarily provides. Spending a Credit on what amounts to an "adequate" straightforward psychological exposé would be debatable.

Love It!!!!

I have just purged through like 4 titles under Anna-Lou Weatherley. I love this author’s writing style, characters and the narrator James Lainey. I am a fan of British/Irish detective novels. This author does not disappoint. Intrigue, and character are huge plus’s.

My favorite by Weatherley so far

Love the twists and turns and how it all came together in the end. Kept me guessing. Great storytelling overall.

The story was very captivating. Once you got into it, you didn't want to put it down.

Took a little while to catch on, but when you did it wasn't very good thriller.
Enjoy listening.

Good story in the genre

It's a good and engaging story. I didn't necessarily feel like the premise paid off big, and there's a bit of obtuseness in the pov characters through the final act in an attempt to build or stretch out some suspense that just isn't there. Worth reading if you like the author, not quite an exemplar of the genre though.

James Lailey is a national treasure

Weatherly has outdone herself, again! It’s a great story with lots of unexpected turns and great character development. Narrator James Lailey brings every character to life. Weatherly and Lailey are an excellent pairing.
