About this listen
Once, her heart was empty. Now it's filled with ice....
Ellen's therapist told her to forget the past, but the life she’s left with is boring. All she wants is to be happy and normal, but the approaching long, bleak nights of winter loom heavy before her, especially as she'll be alone.
But when the secrets her mother put in place to protect her are exposed, Ellen learns the frightening truth. Her history is darker than she imagined. She's not who she thinks she is, and the real her is a very different person to the one whom others have mistreated and exploited.
If there's hope of a future, Ellen must find answers about the past, and the new Ellen is less forgiving. This winter, there will be more than just discontent, and DI Barton will struggle in his hardest case to date.
How can he find the truth when all the victims and witnesses are dead?
Ross Greenwood writes gritty, heart-pounding thrillers, with twists aplenty and unforgettable endings. Perfect for fans of Mark Billingham and Stuart MacBride.

good
Liked this one better than book 2 in the series although I found this one a bit stressful, too.
It's made me realize that I'm not a huge fan of murder mysteries with firsthand narration from the killer. And apparently that is the format of this series. But just the same, it worked well, here. The unreliable narration from the villain, which usually frustrates me, was compelling in this case, as both the narrator and the reader know that it is unreliable, and both are trying to figure out what's actually going on. And then in the end, it wasn't so unreliable after all.
The villain was thought-provoking and I'm still not sure what to make of them. I think their story played out in a very satisfying way, even though, at few points, I found myself wishing that they might get away! They were neither sympathetic nor unsympathetic. Rather, I could understand their actions without either approval or judgement. The story was so excessive that, if written differently, it could have been darkly hilarious, but as it was, it was pensive and grim.
I also love that the protagonist is a decent guy with a stable, healthy family life. The recurring characters are quite likable.
Finally, usually I hate twist endings, but the one liner at the end was great, and hammered home the themes of nature versus nurture present throughout the book.

Gripping!
Another winner from this author. Barton and his team are very entertaining, however I would not want to be part of it. His detectives meet sticky ends with alarming regularity. Very entertaining.

Fantastic! Can’t wait for the next One!
The Peterborough police face off against an elusive serial killer again. The chapters are juxtaposed Killer vs Police which builds the tension and although the listener knows many details, surprises turn up until the very end.. just excellent- the book iitself and the narration. Don’t wait to read/ listen to this book.
