About this listen

Most of the world remembers Crazy Horse as a peerless warrior who brought the U.S. Army to its knees at the Battle of Little Bighorn. But to his fellow Lakota Indians, he was a dutiful son and humble fighting man who, with valor, spirit, respect, and unparalleled leadership, fought for his people's land, livelihood, and honor. In this fascinating biography, Joseph Marshall, himself a Lakota Indian, creates a vibrant portrait of the man, his times, and his legacy.

Drawing on firsthand research and his culture's rich oral tradition (rarely shared outside the Native American community), Marshall reveals many aspects of Crazy Horse's life, including details of the powerful vision that convinced him of his duty to help preserve the Lakota homeland, a vision that changed the course of Crazy Horse's life and spurred him confidently into battle time and time again.

The Journey of Crazy Horse is the true story of how one man's fight for his people's survival roused his true genius as a strategist, commander, and trusted leader. And it is an unforgettable portrayal of a revered human being and a profound celebration of a culture, a community, and an enduring way of life.

What the critics say

"A vivid, haunting biography that acknowledges the author's boyhood hero worship but avoids hagiography....This book adds spirit and life to our understanding of this enigmatic and important man." (Publishers Weekly)
"Marshall does a good job of bringing Crazy Horse to life by examining all his milestones....A highly readable, as-accurate-as-the-record-allows study of the nineteenth-century's best-known Lakota chief." (Booklist)

Beautiful story, well written and well read.

of all the books, and movies, of this era this is the one that should be the most sought after. I could not stop listen. it made me laugh and cry it stirred an anger in me I felt in my soul. it was heart wrenching, and triumphant. A story told through those who knew Crazy horse and through those who came after him. it truly takes you back to a time and place we only ever get to see through the eyes of the colonizers. This story is told through the eyes and mouths of the Lakota. This story is the story we should be learning about in History Class. This is the story, I will tell my children and grandchildren when they ask about the ancestors. Truly Beautifully done. Finally a book that tells more accurate accounts then any History book. Thank you.

Amazing Story

This should be part of every high school curriculum. Clear, well written and delivered and most importantly an honest sounding recounting of real people with real lives without losing the humanity and inhumanity in the pitfalls and biases of retelling of history.

Excellent research and narrative history

Very cool to learn more about Crazy Horse than the Hollywood versions. Also interesting to learn about the man and not just the legend.

Great story to hear

The author of this book did a wonderful job of explaining and writing of crazy horse. Felt like I was right there beside crazy horse himself.

Essential reading for anyone who is human

All my ancestors. This story is a lesson to us all. As a white woman, I learned in this book that the beauty of the Lakota culture lends lessons to all peoples everywhere to preserve what is sacred and beneficial for the sake of unity and harmony among all humanity. Humanity is in desperate need of unity. Indigenous ways of knowing and being have been and remain sacred contributions to this process. This story of Crazy Horse helps me to see beyond prejudices to the purity of Lakota ways of knowing and being and cherish it. Many thanks to the increasing number of Indigenous writers for bringing the sacred into the light.

Great Tales Told Well

This book was a great experience for me. I thoroughly enjoyed learning of the man behind the legend of Crazy Horse. Through such tales are we able to better understand not only the man, but the times, the struggles and with careful reflection, ourselves.

I did, however, take one small issue with the audible chapter guide as it does not reflect the actual chapters of the book, so that was mildly disappointing.

real hostory

a good telling of the man behind the myth and legend who is crazy horse. unlike many books based on these histories which seem to be somewhat biased to the settlers point of view, this includes old wisdom from the people of the land.

One of the best

Definitely one of the best first nation history novels I have listen to or read. The fact that it is read by the author who is Lakota and has that special connection. It’s a special combination

Excellent and informative

The music is a bit jarring, because it always starts so suddenly and can be quite startling when you're listening to the book while driving, but the story and format are enjoyable. The authour's "Reflections" are often repetitive and unnecessary as a result, but easy enough to overlook, compared to the rest of the work.
