What the critics say

"The legal-thriller genre lends itself to the pattern of conversion that evangelical Christian novels require, and Singer offers logical character developments that aren't heavy-handed. The only stock feature in this well-plotted novel is the generic, fakey-sounding names (Brad Carson, Kelly Starling). But that's a quibble about a book that will entertain readers and make them think - what more can one ask?" ( Publishers Weekly)

Good. Variably Biased.

Randy Singer provides an excellent moment-by-moment depiction of a trial for wrongful death versus a gun manufacturer - after the brutal murder of a celebrity on live television. Innovatively, he goes in-depth into the lives of litigants on BOTH sides of the case (*two* opposing protagonists) - dealing with personal demons and struggles with personal senses of self.
The writing is commendable, the plotting is twisty-turny (incorporating events like remarkably realistic blackmail & jury manipulation), and the trial is breakneck-paced (and includes several out-of-nowhere on-the-stand revelations). The book is thoroughly entertaining.
Less fortunately, the author's themes are heavy-handed. I'm a Christian physician, and share many of Singer's positions on things like gun availability and spirituality.. but his portrayal of abortion regret borders on the zealous.. making me recognize that he frequently goes over-the-top in his messaging.

Reader Tom Stechshulte doesn't elevate the book either, unhelpfully. Don't get me wrong, Stechshulte demonstrates creditable diction, timbre, cadence, and tone.. but his voice-acting is distinctly average. His performance neither sucks nor stands out.

Altogether, despite some deficiencies, 'The Justice Game' merits 8.5/10-stars. It's enjoyable and was a happy find on the 'Plus' menu. Even if they asked for a Credit, it would be worth it.

A great courtroom drama

The plot is carefully conceived as a three-fold contest: the lawsuit between the plaintiff and the defendant, and the moral and ethical conflicts within each lawyer. The main characters are three dimensional and believable, and there is a well written supporting cast. There is a good pace to the story which keeps the reader and engrossed to the end. The language is clean, something which enhances the characters and is harder and harder to find. I have practiced law in Canadian courts for forty-five years, and I agree with the verdict—which I didn’t anticipate. Highly recommended.
