About this listen
January 28, 1547. It is almost midnight, and the cream of English nobility hold their breath as King Henry VIII prepares to face his God. As the royal physicians wring their hands and Archbishop Cranmer gallops through the frigid night, two dispossessed princesses pray for their father's soul, and a boy, soon to be king, snivels into his velvet sleeve.
Time slows, and dread settles around the royal bed, the candles dip, and something stirs in the darkness...something, or someone, has come to tell the king it is time to pay his dues.
The Kiss of the Concubine is the story of Anne Boleyn, the second of Henry VIII's queens.

Great reading of a symapthetic portayal of Anne
I was surprised to bed so pleased with this audio book. I am quite picky and easily annoyed both by narrators and writing styles.
Of course, opinions and preferences on these matters vary wildly. I am on the conservative side, I don't appreciate too much embellishment, elaborate descriptions, salacious sex or contrived stories. There was some romance and quite a bit of sex, but it was tame and tasteful, in my opinion.
If you are familiar with Anne's story, this covers many of the incidents you will be familiar with. Some of the same scenes described in Wolf Hall and the Other Boleyn girl, but from a more sympathetic (without trying too hard to be her advocate) view of Anne.
I was mildly annoyed by the occasional scenes in which Anne was given a French accent, and I thought that was a bit of a distraction. However, the narrator was otherwise pleasing to me.
