Publisher's Summary

From Unhooked author Lisa Maxwell comes a captivating new world filled with magic and deception, about a girl who must travel back in time to find a mysterious book that could save her future.

Stop the Magician.

Steal the book.

Save the future.

In modern-day New York, magic is all but extinct. The remaining few who have an affinity for magic - the Mageus - live in the shadows, hiding who they are. Any Mageus who enters Manhattan becomes trapped by the Brink, a dark energy barrier that confines them to the island. Crossing it means losing their power - and often their lives.

Esta is a talented thief, and she's been raised to steal magical artifacts from the sinister Order that created the Brink. With her innate ability to manipulate time, Esta can pilfer from the past, collecting these artifacts before the Order even realizes she's there. And all of Esta's training has been for one final job: traveling back to 1902 to steal an ancient book containing the secrets of the Order - and the Brink - before the Magician can destroy it and doom the Mageus to a hopeless future.

But Old New York is a dangerous world ruled by ruthless gangs and secret societies, a world where the very air crackles with magic. Nothing is as it seems, including the Magician himself. And for Esta to save her future, she may have to betray everyone in the past.

Plot twists on plot twists

Wow! Engaging and thrilling - I burned through this book in three days 😅 I’m generally one of those smug folks who pats themselves on the back for every correctly guessed plot twist, but this one took a few very unexpected turns. My only criticism would be it contains a very old-fashioned, predictable sort of love story where a man is not kind enough to a woman and acts without her consent and for some reason that woos her - a tired trope, particularly in 2020. Old fashioned romance aside, it was a fantastic read and I’m definitely getting the sequels.

Great story, great narration

Loved it! One of my favourite books. Read it before but this time listened to it using Audible with one of my children. Really enjoyed the narration by Candace Thaxton. Very well done.

Exceeded All Expectations

It's been a long time since I have listened to an audio book from start to finish. And it's also been a long time since I've been excited & eager to listen to a book at every chance. The Last Magician had me hooked from the very start though and I was constantly itching to get back to listening at any chance I could get.

This story, along with the narrator's performance, did not disappoint. I can't wait to start book #2 this weekend!

For young readers, terrible narrator

This book might have been great if I was 13, I did not finish it. I would say it's directed towards very young readers, so it's hard to write a review. I did not like the narrator either.

Over the top narration

Story line was...meh. Nothing really intriguing - the cliffhanger ending was annoying only because I didn't realize this was the first of a series.
The cadence of the narrartor was just too over the top. Distracting. I found this book hard to enjoy because of it.

Good fantasy thriller

I'm primarily a sci fi fan but I'd thought I'd give this book a try. Absolutely loved it. Easy to follow and I enjoy the narrator. I will finish the other two books and preorder the forth. I love finding a series that I enjoy. There are good plot twists and of course magic. I'm a fan of magic too. If you like fantasy and old school magic and what an easy listen then I'd highly recommend it.

It was okay

I found it difficult to follow characters around this story. The overall story was good, but not good enough to finish the series.

Good Story

Enjoyed this book. well written and good story. I did not enjoy the way the narrator read the book. Her voice and inflection were disconcerting.
