Publisher's Summary

INCLUDES A NEW INTRODUCTION BY PATRICK ROTHFUSS

Experience one of the most enduring classics of the twentieth century and the book that The Atlantic has called “one of the best fantasy novels ever.”

The unicorn lived in a lilac wood, and she lived all alone...

...so she ventured out from the safety of the enchanted forest on a quest for others of her kind. Joined along the way by the bumbling magician Schmendrick and the indomitable Molly Grue, the unicorn learns all about the joys and sorrows of life and love before meeting her destiny in the castle of a despondent monarch—and confronting the creature that would drive her kind to extinction....

In The Last Unicorn, renowned and beloved novelist Peter S. Beagle spins a poignant tale of love, loss, and wonder that has resonated with millions of readers around the world.

“Peter S. Beagle illuminates with his own particular magic.”—Ursula K. Le Guin

“Comes alive and stays alive on bright intensity of imagination.”—The New York Times Book Review

“Written in lyrical prose and rife with both whimsical humor and philosophical ruminations on what it means to be human, Beagle spins a quasi-medieval fairy tale that remains timeless.”—Time

The Last Unicorn is the best book I have ever read. You need to read it. If you've already read it, you need to read it again.”—Patrick Rothfuss

so good!

I'm not sure why this isn't well renowned, it has instantly become one of my favorite fantasy novels of all time.

Excellent presentation of a classic

I have always been a fan of the movie since I as a child.
This was a great experience as i could imagine the movie and the soundtrack as the story unfolded.

A bizarrely self-aware fantasy adventure

I always enjoyed the film so I thought I would give the book a try. I do not regret it. It added more context and emotion to all sorts of scenes. I particularly enjoyed the dynamics of Schmendrick and Molly Grue. I feel like the narrator has seen the film because she used the perfect voice for the Unicorn. The story references itself as a story many times and it creates this almost surreal feeling while reading. Like the characters know they are throwing themselves into fate but actively choosing to do so. Which I appreciated because it made the story feel that much more like a painting.

A Message to all who love Unicorns.

This book came to me when I was young and perhaps the age of Princess Amalthea. It has followed me throughout my life and I feel as though I have lived, in part, all the archetypal characters in this amazing little book. I loved it then as I love it now that I am old and relistening to it here. Blessings to Peter S. Beagle for sharing this tale with us - all those who have or have not seen one or have only known she has passed by. I wish them and all who love this story fair journey. May we all know the meaning of unicorns.
