About this listen
This is DC Smith's third investigation with the Diver and Diver Associates agency. They have been asked by a member of Norfolk's aristocracy to look into the tragic death of her younger brother, Freddie, the late Lord Thorpe of the title. The inquest verdict was of misadventure, but it isn't long before Smith begins to suspect there has been a serious miscarriage of justice.

Story
Renée Ballard works the night shift in Hollywood, beginning many investigations but finishing none, as each morning she turns her cases over to day shift detectives. A once up-and-coming detective, she's been given this beat as punishment after filing a sexual harassment complaint against a supervisor. But one night she catches two cases she doesn't want to part with: the brutal beating of a prostitute left for dead in a parking lot and the killing of a young woman in a nightclub shooting. Ballard is determined not to give up at dawn.

Suddenly, after months of waiting and wondering, Waters finds himself in at the deep end, and alone at the scene of a puzzling murder. As the investigation proceeds, the detectives at Kings Lake Central find themselves visiting familiar places and talking to some familiar faces, while old enmities reappear in the incident room. Before this is over, Chris Waters will need to make a career-changing decision.

Don't start here....
If you haven't read the DC Smith series, I recommend starting at the beginning, not here. I loved this book, but I think it falls short of Grainger's previous books, and its appeal for me was in knowing the characters already. It's a bit shy on plot, and doesn't tie up loose ends, but the fondness for Smith, and the further development of his character is what I enjoyed. Grainger also shows his talent at character development with the introduction of Polly. I liked her almost immediately, and look forward to her presence in the next book (back to waiting again!).
Gildart Jackson IS Smith, and any other narrator would be a great disappointment, no matter how good their narration.

Smith is irresistible
The narration is a little slow, but like it after listening to a ton of books.

Another Fabulous DC Smith Novel
I am not as eloquent as other reviewers, what I can say is I agree with all the five star reviews before me! I have listened to every DC and King's Lake novel and confess often listen to them over and over again when I can''t find another crime series I like. Grainger came to writing late in life and I thank the stars he did!
Grainger's characters grow and develop unlike other series. No template is followed like so many series. I can't say enough good things about his writing. Others capture his skills far better than I can. WELL DONE.

Character depth, story line and wit
The authors ability to create characters with depth and personality is wonderful. I've now finished the entire series and will hope for more! The narrator is a favorite and I enjoy listening for hours at a time.

And the wait begins anew
The time and date of the release was embedded in my calendar for months. I attempted to fill the gap with some decent, some mediocre, and some downright awful books vowing that this time I would savour the latest offering in Smith fashion. One course at a time. The writing so artful , the story so compelling and the narration so exquisite I devoured the entire feast in 2 days. So much for my good intentions.
I found the process of choosing a narrator for Jo's book a particular delight. Thanks to Peter for keeping we Audio junkies in mind. I am reasonably certain Gildart Jackson would have been high on the shortlist had he not been erstwhile involved in bringing Jo , David and the entire constellation to life. I rank this latest book amoung the best in the Smith series. I have my calendar ready for the next one.
