Came into The Late Shift knowing the basic back story about this exciting time in TV but Bill Carter provides the full detailed picture on the struggle to host The Tonight Show after Johnny Carson left. I listened to this book almost non stop (Well, if taking 4 days to listen to it is "non stop".). Immensely interesting and never boring, this is a must for David Letterman fans and I guess if there are any Leno fans they'd like it too. I just can't believe how badly NBC bungled this whole thing at the time and this book will tell you all about it, Read it today!

Interesting, fascinating and entertaining at times, especially when focusing on the early days of Letterman, Leno and Conan, and the transition period from Carson to all the other guys… But the topic could get quite dry and nuts n bolts at times - detailing behind the scenes deals, meetings, and executive decision-making and conversations. Stretches of boring contract details and negotiations unfortunately. Narrator is good enough. The story is probably the most lacking. Maybe could’ve been 100 pages shorter. Overall worth it though if you’re interested in the subject and personalities.
