About this listen

Christopher Buehlman excels in twisting the familiar into newfound dread in his genre-bending novels. Now the acclaimed author of Those Across the River delivers his most disquieting tale yet.

The secret is, vampires are real and I am one. The secret is, I'm stealing from you what is most truly yours and I'm not sorry.…

New York City in 1978 is a dirty, dangerous place to live - and die. Joey Peacock knows this as well as anybody - he has spent the last 40 years as an adolescent vampire, perfecting the routine he now enjoys: womanizing in punk clubs and discotheques, feeding by night, and sleeping by day with others of his kind in the macabre labyrinth under the city's sidewalks.

The subways are his playground and his highway, shuttling him throughout Manhattan to bleed the unsuspecting in the Sheep Meadow of Central Park or in the backseats of Checker cabs, or even those in their own apartments who are too hypnotized by sitcoms to notice him opening their windows. It's almost too easy.

Until one night he sees them hunting on his beloved subway. The children with the merry eyes. Vampires, like him…or not like him. Whatever they are, whatever their appearance means, the undead in the tunnels of Manhattan are not as safe as they once were.

And neither are the rest of us.

Listened to the whole book in a day!

I was expecting a light, cheesey vampire novel and was pleasantly surprised to find this is so much more! it's well written, super fun and completely engrossing. I had to listen to the whole thing start to finish.

Absolutely loved it! Sad it was over!

This was a really pleasant surprise. To make sure I dont miss anything Ill break it down to what I remember liking:
Plot - Very original. I love period pieces and this was set in the late 70s. I find that a cleaner, more enjoyable story can be told when technology isn't involved. The characters felt real and the character building was excellent so much that I was very involved and cared about them to the point when some of them died I actually felt sad. The ending.....wow he was incredibly brave to write it the way he did. Not to give it away but it's not your typical ending I was expecting and I loved it!

Narration: Christopher Buehlman did a fantastic job of narration. It reminded me of Neil Gaiman narrating his own books. I bet he had in his mind exactly what each charactered sounded like. They are all unique and interesting characters which the accents and nuances which made this book an joy to listen to.

Overall this is a vampire book that paints 1970s New York with unique and real characters with a riveting story and plot and has brave ending that caught me off guard. Its a fantastic listen!

Free book? Shut up, I would have used my credit!

I have been listening to apocalyptic books, zombies, viruses etc. I normally would not listen to a vampire book but I thought “Why not? It’s free”. I loved the narrators voice, reading it you would never put the New York drawl in the words. Well written, character development, you are rooting for the characters to get what they need. Recommend. Five *****

One of the best horror audiobooks I’ve encountered

The story is gripping. The use of narrative perspective outstanding. Fascinating take on the vampire genre. And the narrator is outstanding (it’s the author so he knows every voice perfectly). Wow. This totally justifies the extra expense of membership- thank you, Audible Plus!

Great

A really entertaining book! Spooky and well written. It is read by the author and he does a great job with the varied voices and because it is his own work, know precisely how to read it. Quickly and easily consumed and worth the listen!

A good original story

I am really enjoyed this. The first person narration really worked well and I enjoyed the narrator. Since the narrator and the author are the same person it really helped convey the voice of the story well. On top of that was a good original take on the vampire genre. Just enough of the common lore with a touch of personalization that is typically missing when the vampire is the monster and not the story teller.

wow best literally roller coaster of my life

Buehlman really kept me hooked. wow the last three hours esspecially just kept my interest as locked in as would have a bag of free cocaine. I usually find battle scenes so boring. these battles had me on the edge of my seat. The intrigue! This was the vampire story I have wanted to read or experience since I was seventeen playing white wolf's masquerade online. thank you Buehlman! please more please!
