About this listen
The inspiration for the major new BBC drama series Dublin Murders.
Still traumatised by her brush with a psychopath, Detective Cassie Maddox transfers out of the murder squad and starts a relationship with fellow detective Sam O'Neill. When he calls her to the scene of his new case, she is shocked to find that the murdered girl is her double. What's more, her ID shows she is Lexie Madison - the identity Cassie used years ago as an undercover detective.
With no leads, no suspects and no clues to Lexie's real identity, Cassie's old boss spots the opportunity of a lifetime: send Cassie undercover in her place, to tempt the killer out of hiding to finish the job.

Story
Two years ago, a hostile Prime Minister launched the Monochrome inquiry, investigating "historical over-reaching" by the British Secret Service “to investigate historical over-reaching.” Monochrome’s mission was to ferret out any hint of misconduct by any MI5 officer—and allowed Griselda Fleet and Malcolm Kyle, the two civil servants seconded to the project, unfettered access to any and all confidential information in the Service archives in order to do so. But MI5’s formidable First Desk did not become Britain’s top spy by accident, and she has successfully thwarted the inquiry at every turn.

Thoroughly enjoyable listen
A friend alerted me to this writer and after listening to the first two books in this series, I am so very grateful she did. The stories are richly written and gratifyingly complex. The narration is excellent. I am looking forward to listening to the next books.

Captivating
Love all of Tana French’s books, they keep you guessing which direction the story will go the whole time. Heart racing and hard to put down because you want to know how it ends.

Disappointing
After the first book in the series, I was excited for this one.
Sadly, it is simply disappointing.
The premise is ridiculous. When they say "everyone has a twin", it's not literal. It's an unbelievable premise that someone (an undercover officer, no less) would find their "twin" in a murder victim of the same age, who has assumed the identity of their former undercover character. And that she could just step into this dead victim's life, living with her closest, dearest friends, without being found out . . . simply too far fetched.
And then it went further off the rails with her not wanting to leave her newly stepped into persona, defying her boss, jeopardizing her career . . . Yeah. Right.
I have five hours left to listen to, and am finding it painful.
There are many good crime fiction books out there that have premises a reader can believe. This is NOT one of them.

Review...
I loved the first book in this series and could not wait to hear this novel. Unfortunately I was very disappointed. The narration was well done... that cannot be faulted. However the novel was very poor. Throughout I felt the author was struggling... Trying to find something to say. She used many many, far too many words for so little of a story. Maybe the author felt overwhelmed by her previous success and was trying too hard. At no point was I immersed in the novel.
