Publisher's Summary

With its first broadcast on BBC Radio 4 on March 8th, 1981, this dramatised tale of Middle Earth became an instant global classic. It boasts a truly outstanding cast including Ian Holm (as Frodo), Sir Michael Hordern (as Gandalf), Robert Stephens (as Aragorn), Bill Nighy (as Sam Gamgee) and John Le Mesurier (as Bilbo). Brian Sibley's famous adaptation has been divided into three corresponding parts, with newly recorded beginning and end narration by Ian Holm, who now stars as Bilbo in the feature films based on The Lord of the Rings. Part One, The Fellowship of the Ring, introduces us to Frodo Baggins. With his uncle Bilbo having mysteriously disappeared, Frodo finds himself in possession of a simple gold ring that has great and evil power. It is the Ruling Ring, taken long ago from the Dark Lord, Sauron, who now seeks to possess it again. Frodo must do everything he can to prevent this, and with the help of Gandalf the wizard and a band of loyal companions he begins a perilous journey across Middle-earth. Sauron's Black Riders are on their trail as they travel to Rivendell, attempt to cross the snow-swept Misty Mountains and, in desperation, enter the terrifying Mines of Moria.

This is NOT a reading of the book.

I REALLY wish this was made clear before I downloaded this book, this is NOT actually the book but a version of it — a dramatization. If you want to experience the whole book as it was written, look elsewhere. I'm very annoyed right now.

Very good, but...

Well, it is a short form of the book.
Many small parts not included.
However, it's good!

excellent dramatization

At first I expected a reading of the book, and so was annoyed, but the whole thing grew on me as a very enjoyable experience overall.

Not a direct reading

Although this is not a direct reading, it is still enjoyable to listen to. I liken it to listening to a radio broadcast from the 40's and 50's. This is really good, especially if listening g to it while driving as it helps pass the time.

Very, very well done.

Well worth listening to. Greatly entertaining. It captures the essentials of the much longer tale.

well read and dramatized

excellent voice actors. the sounds and dramatization bring you into their story. occasionally the full sounds make the voices a little difficult to hear.

It's a Dramatization

I enjoyed listening to this audiobook, but with the lack of scene and character descriptions it became hard to follow at some points. The voice acting was great but I kept getting confused with each character.
