The Echo of Old Books meets The Lost Apothecary in this evocative and charming novel full of mystery and secrets.

‘The thing about books,’ she said ‘is that they help you to imagine a life bigger and better than you could ever dream of.’

On a quiet street in Dublin, a lost bookshop is waiting to be found…

For too long, Opaline, Martha and Henry have been the side characters in their own lives.

But when a vanishing bookshop casts its spell, these three unsuspecting strangers will discover that their own stories are every bit as extraordinary as the ones found in the pages of their beloved books. And by unlocking the secrets of the shelves, they find themselves transported to a world of wonder… where nothing is as it seems.

Hailed as one of the best releases of 2023, this contemporary romance weaves a tale of realism across multiple timelines, cementing its place as a top pick in women's general fiction. Its great acclaim has quickly spread, poised to be the latest and last book you'll need to complete your must-read list for the year. For fans of Sally Page (The Book of Beginnings), Fiona Valpy (The Cypress Maze), Eve Chase (The Glass House) and Barbara Davis (The Echo of Old Books) and Jill Mansell (The One You Really Want).

Brilliant

I listened to the audio version and was mesmerized by this captivating story. It was do beautifully written that I had to re-listen to parts of it.
The narrator’s voice was perfect for the story- natural and captivating.
In a world filled with endless books (too many of which I quickly delete), this book was a rare gem - an absolute joy.

The story lost its way.

Such a beautiful idea for a story and so many interesting and unique details, but it lost its way. A slow and often confusing start and then just as it was getting to the very heart of the intertwined relationships and alternating plots; it rushed and tried to tie everything up too quickly. The potentially most beautiful and interesting parts were blustered through and left me wondering what just happened?? Unsatisfying ending.

Magnetic

I have not enjoyed a book this much in forever. I loved the story of Opaline and how everything came together. It’s a beautiful book.

Incredibly charming

I love that I couldn’t predict all of the little twists, and even those that I predicted made me smile. I only wish that there was more!

I do recommend it!

I know I loved it because I did not want it to end! It was a lovely and smart story, and it even made me want to know more about the Brönte sisters! It was a bit fantastical at times but it made sense for the story. As a francophone, I found that the readers struggled with pronouncing French words: I wish they had practiced them ahead.

I love this book, now one of my select favourites!

I really enjoyed this book. The story was different than the usual, very welcome and very imaginative, and it kept me guessing what would happen next, which is just great. All the characters very likeable and believable. I could relate to Martha who changed as things played out (no spoilers here). The narrator’s voices were very well-suited to their characters, and they each gave an excellent performance. This is not something I hear often in audio books, and this one definitely has that.

This book instantly become one of my select favourites. So I really want to recommend to potential readers to please ignore the review that said, “the book was rather shallow, lacking the depth”. It was anything but shallow. Each chapter built on what had transpired before, and the characters and the story flowed forward very nicely. The only way we could gain more depth is if the author writes a prequel, which is not a bad idea at all. But this book as it stands is very robust and more than enough, and is a must read! I eagerly look forward to listening to all books written by Evie Woods /Evie Gaughan.

Fantastic!

This has to be one of the best stories ever!! Masterfully written with imagination, poise and wit.
The narrators were perfect. Especially ‘Henry’, Nick Biadon, who, if this makes it to the movies, simply MUST be played by Hugh Grant!
