About this listen

A powerful collection of short stories by Shirley Jackson.

"The Lottery," one of the most terrifying stories of the twentieth century, created a sensation when it was first published in the New Yorker. "Powerful and haunting," and "nights of unrest" were typical reader responses. This collection, the only one to appear during Jackson's lifetime, unites "The Lottery" with 24 equally unusual stories. Together they demonstrate her remarkable range - from the hilarious to the truly horrible - and power as a storyteller.

Nostalic

Loved the old- world charm of the stories. All the narrators were as captivating as the stories themselves.

Well. There Are Words In English, I Guess..

This is legitimately one of the weirdest story collections that I have ever read. I was led to download this collection of vignettes by my respect for the quality of 'The Haunting Of Hill House', and Stephen King's full-throated endorsement of Shirley Jackson as an author.
To be certain, she is shockingly effective at very quickly captivating her readers/listeners - I was intrigued within minutes during each and every one of the episodes that she explores in this collection of shorts. Unfortunately, the curators tease connectivity between the tales that never arrives (presenting the stories as "Parts 1-5" remains one of the most baffling editorial decisions that I have ever encountered).. and I challenge you to uncover an actual plot in any one of the individual offerings. The aimless randomness is jaw-dropping.

Solidly in favor of the recording, however: outstanding presentation. Each of the readers employed to read the entries (Stefan Rudnicki, Kathe Mazur, Cassandra Campbell, and Gabrielle de Cuir) turn in spot-on, emotive performances.. and Skyboat Media sound engineers provide exemplary technical support.

Altogether, I rate 'The Lottery, and Other Stories' 1.5 stars out of 10. Even as a free 'Plus' option, it was a great-sounding waste of time. Maybe you can get more out of this oddly-compiled effort than I did if you decide to try it. I wish you luck.

It was not as expected and the narrator’s voice was not engaging

I did not like this one at all. I like short stories but this audiobook fell flat. I never give up and always listen to the the end for some redeeming qualities. I’m sorry but this one is not one I would recommend
