Pulpy.. but Entertaining

"Richard Stark" (Donald E. Westlake) came up with a commercially successful story structure template for his Hardboiled Noir Sociopathic "antihero" Parker: In Part One of his novels, Parker and some other criminals plan a heist. In Part Two, they commit the crime, ending with a betrayal of some kind. In Part Three, we hear from the guys who double-crossed him (escaped from him in this one). In Part Four, Parker coldly exacts revenge.
I suspect much of the fun for Parker fans is predicting which one of the co-conspirators is going to foolishly betray this homicidal moron.

You are likely getting the idea that I'm not impressed with the character - but that's not entirely true. Parker is cartoonish and two-dimensional, but fascinating. I could totally see readers becoming enamored with this puzzling pure-adrenaline criminal
..and tuning in book after book to see what he steals/who he kills this time.

As in Book One, John Chancer's reading is "acceptable" (professional but nothing special.. although his baritone, gravelly interpretation of 'Parker' fits the character perfectly).

I won't be listening to any more of the series (despite the audiobooks being offered for free with my subscription). Regardless, this installment rates a solid 7/10 stars as a sample of this "Noir" sub-segment within the Crime Fiction genre. You're not wrong to give it a listen.

[The Parker character is intriguing and the writing is creditable, but Stark's plots are too cookie-cutter for me to personally continue. You are welcome to do so if the formula grabs you]
