About this listen

Ten years ago he killed my son. Today I married him.

Ten years ago my darling son Jesse was murdered and our perfect family was destroyed. My strong, handsome boy, so full of life, became a memory, a photo I carried with me everywhere.

But today I’m finally close to finding happiness again. My ash-blonde hair has been curled into ringlets. Carefully placed white flowers frame my delicate features. The small, drab chapel has been prettied up with white satin, and there are tiny red hearts scattered on the small table where I will soon sign the register with my new husband.

The man who killed my son.

My friends and family can’t understand it. My neighbours whisper in the street whenever I walk past. How can I love a man like Tom?

They don’t really know me at all....

The most enthralling psychological thriller you’ll listen to this year from the best-selling author K.L. Slater. If you love The Wife Between Us or Gone Girl, you’ll be totally hooked on The Marriage.

One of the best books in the genre I have read !

Well narrated and easy to follow chapters between the characters. Suspenseful and twisting plot that I thoroughly enjoyed and was completely absorbed in hour after hour !
Loved it !

Last ⅓ Is Great

.. the problem is that the first ⅔ is *plodding*.
K.L. Slater crafts a captivating tale of suspicions, betrayals (imagined & real), relatable personality conflicts, and murder. The writing is competent (although surprisingly lacking in foreshadowing), the characters are realistic & flawed (often actually unlikable), the dialogue is plausible (emotional & occasionally alcohol-fueled), and the plot is full of twists and turns (loaded with surprises).
Unfortunately, Slater's lack of a sense of pacing is aggravating. The payoff for sticking with the book is satisfying, but the buildup would be legitimately boring if the underlying scenario (a bereft mom marrying her child's murderer while he's in prison) wasn't so shockingly unique. Virtually nothing happens besides character-building flashbacks and angry conversations for the majority of the book.

On the good side of the recording: Narrator Lucy Price-Lewis's performance is outstanding. Her diction, timbre, cadence, tone, pacing, and voice-acting are all exemplary. Well done, Audible Studios Inc. The performance alone is able to keep readers/listeners interested.

Despite the unsurpassed performance, howeber, I can only rate 'The Marriage' 8 stars out of 10. It's an incredible value if you can get it as part of the 'Plus' catalogue - but spend the Credit on it only if you are a dedicated Psychological Thriller afficianado. It's honestly only a slightly above-average option.

Narrator often switched from "Robert" to "Rupert"

Narrator often switched from "Robert" to "Rupert" while reading - particularly in chapter 49

Last chapter

The last chapter was possibly the best twisty ending I’ve ever read. Sweet yet salty.

Gossipy women

I enjoyed this book. The narrator was excellentllent. But I felt like I was listening to
A group of gossipy women banter and complain about each other. Not too
Much suspense or thrills. A different story though.

Master play of perspectives

The author and narrator did a wonderful play of making us readers/listeners suspicious and annoyed of each character at each chapter. It's amazing how perspective can twist "reality" and how the same facts told from another point of view point to different conclusions and judgment. This book was even better than The Widow by same author which I listened to just before this one.

I’m not sure why there’s negative reviews. I loved this book!! I kinda figured out the twist but I still couldn’t stop listening. Done in a day!

Well narrated but the story dragged at times.

Overall, this book was pretty good and I really enjoyed the narration. As I was listening though, I often thought to myself "this part could have been made so much more interesting". So, it was okay but I didn't love it.
