Publisher's Summary

It could be worse. You could be stuck with a literal shoulder demon.

After dying and being reborn into a world that's built like a video game, Jim has found himself stuck in a very old-world style new-player zone for low-level adventurers. Unfortunately, the zone fell out of use centuries ago, and no one told the monsters they were supposed to take it easy on the Noobs. Even worse, the only new player around is Jim.

Jim has been given an opportunity, and he'll do his best to take advantage of it.

Fun listen.

Pretty standard for a Lit RPG. I enjoyed listening to it and plan to keep listening to the other stories. There isn't really anything mind-blowing about the story but it's fun and has a good amount of snark and action once everything gets going. Not too many characters to keep track of in book 1, which made it easier to follow and I'm glad there wasn't a giant harem of female characters all hitting on the main character which I found refreshing. There was definitely a lot of repetition on the stats and I am a little worried the stats/skills will just keep getting longer but hopefully the author condenses it in later books.

A good start

The Mayor of Noobtown was a fun, easy, and relatively quick listen. I bought book 2 right away.

the narrator isn't bad but has very little variation between characters, though I'm a bit of an elitist as I listen to a lot of audiobooks.

Isekai with a sassy, sarcastic, and crafty MC

As the name of this novel suggests, this is a mostly light-hearted adventure. Like every first book in a series it focuses in introducing the characters and setting the stage for the future.

The voice actor performance is splendid and combined with the story presented I had quite a few laughs listing to this audiobook.

worth a shot as I definitely enjoyed my time with it but I think going forward the story really needs to pick up as overall not much actually happened; it felt sort of like the prologue to an epic and hilarious saga.

Fun book

Was a good book, but it did feel a little bit slow to me. Started picking up a lot more near the end

Each book is better than the last

This first book in the series was pretty funny, had some interesting moments. I thought it was pretty good. It was hard to tell the female characters apart, but the voice acting was still reasonable. If I had left a review after reading only the first book, I probably would've knocked it down to 4 stars on both the story and the performance, so my five-star review here is based on the first four books combined.

Initially, I wasn't going to read past the first book because it sounded like it was going to become a town-building simulator. However, during a period where the only LitRPG books I was being recommended were all dark and dour, I wanted humor so much that I returned to the second book despite that misgiving and found it was NOT going to become a town-building simulator. That job got shuffled off to an NPC that Jim hates, even though the story still does take place in and around that single town. It was still an incredibly humorous story that improved on every aspect of the system, characterizations, plot progression, and even voice work. The second book cemented the idea that I was definitely going to enjoy this series to the end.

After that, the third book improved on all fronts again, and by the fourth book the system and characters are all so well fleshed out. I can't wait for the fifth book to come out! The fourth book had a powerful cliffhanger ending, and I want to see how the new story dynamic will play out.

Shout-out to Jonathan McClain who has become my absolute favorite voice actor because of this series. It was mainly from the third book that I really noticed he had begun putting strong emotions into every line, even the basic narration. The voices of the female cast never changed through four books, but I found I was able to tell them apart extremely well by the third book just based on their accents and, interestingly, the way they breathed. The action scenes are also described in non-stop heart-pounding excitement, and the humor is only enhanced by his comedic timing.

Amazing writing and narration

Can't wait to listen the the next book. The amount of humor in both writing and delivery continues consistently through out the novel keeping you fully engaged in the story. Extremely well done!
