Publisher's Summary

In the best-selling tradition of Sloan Crosley's I Was Told There'd Be Cake and Mindy Kaling's Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, here is a collection of humorous essays on what it's like to be unabashedly awkward in a world that regards introverts as hapless misfits and Black as cool.

"My name is 'J' and I'm awkward--and Black. Someone once told me those were the two worst things anyone could be. That someone was right. Where do I start?"

Being an introvert in a world that glorifies cool isn't easy. But when Issa Rae, the creator of the Shorty Award-winning hit series The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl, is that introvert--whether she's navigating love, work, friendships, or rapping-- it sure is entertaining. Now, in this debut collection of essays written in her witty and self-deprecating voice, Rae covers everything from cybersexing in the early days of the Internet to deflecting unsolicited comments on weight gain, from navigating the perils of eating out alone and public displays of affection to learning to accept yourself --natural hair and all.

A reflection on her own unique experiences as a cyber pioneer yet universally appealing, The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl is a book no one--awkward or cool, Black, White, or other--will want to miss.

From One Awkward Black Girl to Another

This book is hilarious, insightful, and very relatable. I’m happy I chose the audiobook over print the version, and I’m glad she chose to narrate it herself. The pauses and intonation in her voice made it a great read (or listen lol), and I caught myself laughing ferociously at moments that I did not expect to, especially because she sounded so serious just before making a joke. It was like receiving, a pleasantly unexpected slap in the face. I love that she wore the hat of both storyteller and comedian. I wish the book was a little bit longer, and hopefully she comes out with more books, but I am defiantly satisfied with this one, especially with it being my first audiobook. I Give It Two Thumbs Up.

Intriguing, entertaining, and thought-provoking

Loved it. Issa is endearing, honest and hilarious. Since Audible is forcing me to write 6 more words, I'll add that this was so far the most sincere readings I've listened to.

I fuxxx with Issa

I enjoyed her backstory and her matter of fact way of describing things. She is that sarcastic funny that works...does not come across as mean...just genuine inner thoughts said aloud. I visited Senegal with family in that tourist way...wish I got to visit it in the personal family way that she did. Thanks Issa, interesting listen.
